Attitudes of Nursing Students Toward Mental Retardation Before and After Curricular Experience With Mentally Retarded Children.
Abstract: This study sought to determine whether or not the attitudes of nursing students toward mental retardation were different after a planned curricular experience with mentally retarded children. The sample consisted of 72 nursing students enrolled in the University of Florida College of Nursing, in the summer and fall quarters, 1974. There were 46 students who had not had the planned experience with mentally retarded children and 26 students who had already had the experience. The design of the study was the Static-Group Comparison discussed by Campbell and Stanley. The Attitude Behavior Scale Toward Mental Retardation (ABS-MR) developed by John E. Jordan was used to measure attitudes and information about mental retardation. The ABS-MR was divided into 10 subscales. Hypotheses were formulated for eight of these subscales. The hypotheses predicted that there would be a significant difference in the pretest and posttest groups in their attitudes toward mental retardation and in their knowledge about mental retardation. There was a difference in the mean scores for all eight hypotheses, but only two were statistically significant, one of which concerned the subjects' perceptions of what other people generally believe about interacting with the mentally retarded; the other dealt with the subjects' perceptions of aspects of life or life situations. The differences were all in a negative direction except for the difference on the subscale dealing with knowledge about mental retardation which was in a positive direction . It was concluded that there was a difference in attitudes after the planned curricular experience with mentally retarded children, factual information may increase as a result of planned curricular experience and attitudes tended to become more negative after such experience. Sweet and funny, Humorous Verse for Parents is a wryly observed collection of sharply drawn anecdotes. This delightfully entertaining poetry gift book is a must-read for parents new or experienced. Light-hearted in style but heart-felt, HV4P is a touching anthology that does not paint parenting as an ongoing horror story or, like the dreaded parenting manual, hint at the perfect life you could have if only you were a better parent. Humorous Verse for Parents simply serves up the realities; exhausting and exhilarating, funny, fabulous and weird, that sum up life as a parent - plus a bonus short story. A perfect book for sharing, even a tired parent could manage it. The author, Amanda Baker has made best use of her experience as a mother, grandmother, poet, author, comedy writer and performer to create this neat, unique little offering.

For Rachel Smith and her four companions, hope for earth is in the distant past along with cannibalism, land collapses and real human interaction. 200 years old, she exists in the mess created by 20th and 21st century. Flung out into space at the mercy of technology she does not understand, with memories and ghosts for company, Rachel faces the unknowable unknown alone. Just like TRAPPIST 1, Rachel's destination is merely guessed at using data from super telescopes and mathematical equations. She cannot come home ZERO ONE ZERO TWO is a spare offering of satirical social comment wrapped in a futuristic dystopian narrative sprinkled with dark, dry humour. The hallucinogenic prose morphs into occasional poetry and back again in lines that are as blurred as the sense of reality and dreamscape. Threaded through a tale of human failings and romantic and platonic love there is a delicate balance of hope and despair, brutality and beauty.

Would anyone be interested in the calamitous escapades of a mixed-race granny living in suburban Edinburgh? She's not young or white or beautiful so Granny Annie shouldn't even be the central character of a desperate, action-adventure tale of degeneracy, heroism (sort of), fear, confusion and global capitalist conspiracy.Would anyone give a second thought to a middle-(old)-aged woman minding her own business when fate, in the unpleasant guise of creepy crime boss Premature Pete comes a-knocking? But if you don't pay attention, you won't discover why this beetroot-pickling superstar Granny has to placate Carnal Carla, entertain Li'll Frankie and feed Big Bruce, while avoiding being brutally murdered in her own shed/garage/ lean-to thingy. The answers to all of these questions, and more, can be found in Sex, Violence & the Wrong Mobility Scooter. But be warned, Granny Annie's addictive adventures are just beginning

Eco-warriors come in all shapes and sizes.Performed in The Scottish Parliament (2017), Casey & the Surfmen is an environmental story for all ages, written in verse and originally a spoken word piece. This contemporary fable hovers somewhere between The Rime of Ancient Mariner and Avatar. Magic, menace and mystical creatures take the reader into the expanse of a child's imagination, on to a dreamscape apocalypse and back to the shore of humanity's original promise. This whimsical parable is afloat on ocean rhythms, ebbing and flowing with the cadence of tides; swelling on storms, resounding on wave-washed rocks and rippling over surf-kissed shorelines. As well as enjoying the print version, you can buy an audio download or listen for free to Casey & the Surfmen, read by the author, by going to the bandcamp website.
