The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE For ten years it has been my pleasure to write articles on the leading hymns and hymn- writers for The Christian Endeavor World, one a month. These hymns were suggested as memory hymns for the Christian Endeavor societies, the hymns to be sung from memory in the meetings, and the facts regarding their writers to be stated to the young people. The considerable amount of hymn lore thus collected is here presented in permanent form for the use of pastors, church workers, young people's societies, and all lovers of hymns. No claim is made to originality; only a few of these chapters consist of material here presented for the first time; most of the book is collected from a large number of volumes. The usefulness of the book will spring from the wide range of hymn literature which has been examined, the most interesting and inspiring facts being collated for this volume. A knowledge of the authors of our hymns, and of the stirring incidents connected with the use of them, cannot fail to make the hymns more precious to every Christian. The one hundred and twenty hymn-writers here treated include the greatest of these poets, and many of the lesser writers. In each case all their most important hymns are named, while one hymn, usually the most famous and beloved, is selected for printing in full. I can have no happier wish for this book than that it may bring the same pleasure and profit to its readers that the writing of it has brought to me. AMOS R. WELLS. Boston, Mass.
Junior Recitations: A Collection of Exercises, Dialogues, and Single Pieces, Suitable for Junior Meetings and Public Entertainments

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Preface THIS book of recitations for Junior societies is, in one point at least, different from all books of recitations with which I am acquainted. I refer to the directions for speaking prefixed to each piece. Much thought has been spent upon this unique feature, and I trust that these directions will be found to be not only workable and varied, but helpful in interpreting the spirit of the recitations to the speakers them- selves, and to the children that listen. It will be seen that the selections cover with fulness all the various holidays, anniversaries, and special occasions such as New Years, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, the harvest season, Children's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, and so on, and that at the same time a large number of recitations and exercises are suitable for use at any time. The great importance of those topics has led me to pay special attention to temperance and missionary recitations and exercises. The book contains quite a number of original exercises never published before. For permission to use the work of others I am grateful to the authors and to their publishers. I have obtained this permission whenever I could learn the address of author or publisher, and have given full credit in connection with the piece; but many of these poems were found floating about through periodical literature, and had long ago lost all trace of their parentage. In some of these I have ventured to make slight corrections, feeling sure that they were not as originally written. Many poems are equally suitable for various occasions, and I have added at the close of the volume a full cross index, which will assist in the use of the book. It remains to say that if this collection finds favor, it will be followed in time by others made upon the same plan. AMOS R. WELLS. Boston, Mass., July, I899.

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE THE preparation of this Manual would have been quite impossible for me had I not received the most cordial assistance from Junior workers all over the world. In response to a request printed in The Golden Rule, letters from Junior superintendents fairly rained down upon me, each expressing the great need of a manual of Junior methods, and the desire of the writer to co-operate. I wish it were possible to print here the names of these kind friends, who are more the authors of this book than I am. I can at least express thus publicly my sense of obligation to them, and my sincere gratitude. Will not all Junior workers take up and continue this partner- ship? New and useful ways of working are constantly devised by Junior superintendents. If you will send to me, at the office of The Golden Rule, Boston, Mass., an account of any helpful plan not incorporated in these pages, it will be published at once in the international Christian Endeavor organ, and be inserted in future editions of the Junior Manual. It is too much to hope that this book, even though a large amount of labor has been spent upon it, will prove entirely satisfactory to every one, and in all of its forty chapters. I have done my best, however, to make it straightforward, practical, and to the point; and I shall be richly rewarded if the noble Junior Christian Endeavor workers, whom I so much honor, are in any way inspired and helped by these pages. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits HOW TO USE THIS BOOK The various chapters of this book are published as separate leaflets, and are sold by the United Society of Christian Endeavor either separately or in quantities. It is recommended that Junior societies obtain a supply of them sufficient to give every member of the society a copy of each of the first three leaflets (Chapters I., II., and III. of this book), and that every officer and committee member receive the leaflet discussing his work. A copy of the leaflet for prayer-meeting leaders (Chapter XX.) may well be placed in the hands of the successive leaders of your meetings, and the leaflet for preparatory members (Chapter XXL) may be given to those members. The leaflets on the Quiet Hour and the Tenth Legion are for general distribution when it is desired to arouse special interest in these subjects. It is hoped that the societies everywhere will adopt a rule that each officer and committee member shall, within a month after election, pass (753) an examination in the work of his office, or else cease to hold it. The questions given here will be asked by the superintendent, and it is partly for the superintendent's convenience that the leaflets have been gathered into the present volume. Also, many superintendents will wish to form the older Juniors into classes for the study of this book, that they may become acquainted with all lines of Junior work. The officers of the society, especially, should take this course; so should the Junior committee of the Young People's society. All members of such a class should have copies of the text-book. Conferences of Junior workers are often held in connection with Christian Endeavor conventions and summer schools. Classes in Junior methods may well be formed at such times, and this book will serve as a convenient and comprehensive text-book. The questions and answers will serve as bases of discussion, and essays and talks on topics suggested by these studies will be assigned by the leader according to the time at the disposal of the class. The Living Bible: A Course of Bible - Reading, Covering the Entire Bible, a Chapter a Day, with a Personal Devotional Meditation on Each Chapter

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits INTRODUCTION While this series of devotional comments on the chapters of the Bible was in course of serial publication the author received letters from hundreds of his readers (nearly two thousand), telling him that they were following the course of Bible reading and meditation. These letters came from every State of the United States except Nevada, from every Province of Canada, from Porto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Hawaii, Chile, Australia, France, Turkey, Germany, Holland, England, Finland, Syria, South Africa, China, and Japan. Those that hereafter may use the book will be interested to know of the wide circle that made up its constituency. Many of these letters came from husbands and wives who were reading the Bible through in this way together. In many cases the Bible chapters, with the comments upon them, were made the basis of family prayers. The series has been used in sick-rooms, and many shut-ins have found it useful. Sunday-school teachers have read it with their classes. Ministers have found in it subjects for talks and sermons. My readers have ranged from young children to an old lady of eighty-six and from missionaries to an army colonel. These comments have been translated into Spanish, and perhaps into other languages. The readers have used different languages and versions for the sake of adding to the interest. Many pleasant methods of using these meditations have come to me in these letters. One correspondent has a separate copy of the Scriptures which he calls "The Living Bible," and into this he has pasted the comment for each chapter, clipped from the paper, placing each beside the chapter to which it refers, fastening the clippings by one edge. Another has read with pen in hand, underscoring the principal verses. Another has chosen a verse from each chapter, copying the verse into a blank book and writing his own comment thereon. Another has read each chapter first, getting his own thought upon it, and afterwards reading my comment. Still another has read my comment first, then the chapter, and then has set himself to recalling my comment. Yet another has written in his Bible, as a chapter title, the heading given each comment. The use of these titles for recalling different chapters has been a valued feature with many. The thought of personality has proved most helpful to the majority of my readers-the pro- noun "my" used in the heading of each comment. "I make every paragraph a prayer," writes one friend. Thus the series of meditations has accomplished what I hoped it might accomplish: it has made the Scriptures "the Living Bible" in the experience of many readers. I think that perhaps the method of one of my correspondents will be likely to prove most helpful to the users of this book. It was his habit first to read the chapter for the day, considering carefully as he read what was the key-note of the chapter, the predominant thought, the most striking or central expression. With this in mind he would take up my comment and read it with care, noting the difference, if any, between his thought of the chapter and mine, and comparing the two where they differed. This process could hardly fail to fix in mind the thought of the chapter. The prayer element enters into most of these tiny meditations, and it is hoped that they will be read, as they certainly have been written, in the spirit of prayer. We are often ready enough to talk with God, but not often are we eager and patient to listen and hear what He would say to us. Let our communion with the Most High be genuine communion, our talking with our Father, and-wonder of wonders -His talking with us. It is by means Of this true prayer that the Bible becomes a Jiving book, and we enter into the life which is life indeed. AMOS R. WELLS. Tremont Temple, Boston.

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE No set of workers in our young people's societies is so eager for work to do, or so enthusiastic in doing the work, as our missionary committees. These energetic laborers have long needed a full and systematic manual of directions and suggestions, such as this book aims to be. A few volumes have taken up this task in part and with admirable success, but none with the completeness of detail or anything like the fullness that I have attempted. Those that use this book will find it practical. Indeed, at least half of the plans here set forth have been tried and proved by large numbers of societies all over the world. At the same time, however, recognizing the value of novelty in this work as in most work, I have made up the volume lo a very large extent-probably half - of original plans which have not before been published. I trust that these new methods will be found as useful as the old have been, and that they will give fresh life to thousands of missionary meetings. The book has been written with the one purpose of promoting the growth of the Kingdom of God. May our Saviour use it to that end. AMOS R. WELLS. Boston, June, 1899.

Union Work: A Manual for Local, County, District, and State Christian Endeavor Unions
Amos R. Wells

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE THIS book takes the place of '' Our Unions '' in the list of publications of the United Society of Christian Endeavor, but it is not a revision of that volume. "Union Work '' is a new book from beginning to end, every sentence appearing here for the first time. Since "Our Unions" was written, twenty years ago, Christian Endeavor unions have obtained a remarkable development, calling for an entirely new manual. An indication of this development is the present volume, which, though strictly condensed, is three times as large as "Our Unions, '' and treats many important subjects which are not even mentioned in the former manual because they had not yet been introduced in union work. It is hoped that many unions will form their officers and leading workers into classes for the study of this book under enthusiastic leaders. To facilitate this class work each chapter is followed by a set of questions upon it, with subjects for talks, essays, and debates. It is the aim of this book to present a picture of Christian Endeavor unions in their manifold present- day activities, to set forth the methods of work that have been found most useful, and to make manifest the value of our unions to the societies, the churches, and the community. They train the Endeavorers in many modes of co-operation and in the management of large affairs, thus furnishing to the churches for their widest interests a splendid body of skilled workers. In most communities they are the only interdenominational agencies at work along many important lines, thus drawing the churches together and doing much for the uplift of their towns and cities. This book is dedicated to the thousands of Christian Endeavor union officers throughout the world, whose deep devotion and fine ability are doing so much for the kingdom of God. May they find in these pages not only practical directions for their tasks, but the inspiration for new zeal and larger endeavors. AMOS R. WELLS Boston, Massachusetts.

Among these were many busy pastors, some of whom could find time for this work only by rising in the small hours of the morning. Many others were earnest Sunday-school teachers, whose classes were enthusiastic over this practical method of gaining familiarity with the Book of Books. The superintendents of Junior Christian Endeavor societies found the course well within the under- standing of their young charges. In fact, the ages of those following the course ranged, so far as is known, from five to eighty-six. Mothers marked Bibles for their sons to use when they should be able to read. Classes were formed in homes. Other classes, led by pastors, were formed in Christian Endeavor societies. The Y. M. C. A., the Epworth League, and other organizations, found it useful to some of their members. The plan was utilized in family prayers. Some enthusiasts copied the entire course for others that could not take the paper. One missionary even proposes to translate the course into Chinese Moreover, Marksmen reported themselves from many distant regions of the earth-from South Africa, Canada, Japan. Mexico, Turkey, England, Jamaica, Cuba, China, New Zealand, and even a class of twenty-two in Palestine, nearly all of whom did their marking in Arabic Bibles. Since the course has met with such a reception, it has been thought likely that many may wish to have it in permanent form, more especially as, so far as the author knows, no system of Bible- marking, at the same time simple and comprehensive, has ever before been printed. It is believed that familiarity with this method will give great facility not only in marking the Bible, but in using it after it is marked. Fifteen minutes will easily suffice to accomplish the work here laid down for any day, and is not that small fraction of time well bestowed if it will acquaint us with a great Bible truth, and place it where our hands can readily find it if our memory at any time proves treacherous?
