States such as Russia and Ukraine may not have gone back to totalitarianism or the traditional authoritarian formula of stuffing the ballot box. But a whole industry of 'political technology' has developed instead, with shadowy private firms and government 'fixers' on lucrative contracts dedicated to the black arts of organising electoral success. This book uncovers the sophisticated techniques of the 'virtual' political system used to legitimise post-Soviet regimes: entire fake parties, phantom political rivals and 'scarecrow' opponents. And it exposes the paramount role of the mass media in projecting these creations and in falsifying the entire political process. Wilson argues that it is not primarily economic problems that have made it so difficult to develop meaningful democracy in the former Soviet world. Although the West has seen its 'spin doctors', dirty tricks and aggressive ad campaigns, it is the unique post-Bolshevik culture of 'political technology' that is the main obstacle to better governance in the region, to real popular participation in public affairs and to the modernisation of the political economy in the longer term.

The Festiniog Railway can trace its history back to 1829 and it was constructed to serve the slate quarries in the area. It was built to the gauge of 2ft as this was the track width used in the quarries. Originally powered by gravity and horses, by 1863 steam had come to the line. In 1869 the first Fairlie-designed double locomotive appeared. The railway was built to serve the slate trade but by the First World War trade had declined due to a number of factors. Passenger traffic was by then the mainstay of trade and the summer tourists kept the line in profit. But the Second World War was to see the closure of the line. It lay after the war, neglected and vandalised, until 1950 when steps were made towards preservation. By 1954 that had become a reality and the wonderland of Wales was back up and running. Today it is one of the best known of Wales' narrow gauge railways.

One of the joys of the Welsh narrow gauge is its sheer variety and apparent antiquity. While many of the railways were designed from the outset as miniature mainlines, others were constructed on a shoestring. If the railways had anything in common, however, it was their individuality and uniqueness. Those concerns operating in the 1960s were very different organisations to the railways of the 1920s and 30s. The Festiniog and Talyllyn had avoided being absorbed by the Great Western or LMS in 1923 and had gone their own ways, while the Corris, Vale of Rheidol and Welshpool & Llanfair had all come under the umbrella of Swindon. The Snowdon Mountain Railway, the Fairbourne, Glyn Valley and Great Orme Tramway were left to plough their individual furrows in an increasingly road-orientated society. Thanks to the preservation societies, which have revived the fortunes of many of the railways joining forces in 1970 under the banner of 'The Great Little Trains of Wales'. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, Andrew Wilson takes the reader on a nostalgic journey through North Wales, revisiting the rich diversity and charm of the Welsh narrow gauge railways and showing how they have changed in the last half century.
