This Norton Critical Edition includes five of Chekhov’s major plays—Ivanov, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard—and three early one-act farces that inform his later work—The Bear, The Wedding, and The Celebration. Laurence Senelick’s masterful translations closely preserve Chekhov’s singular style—his abundant jokes and literary allusions and his careful use of phrase repetition to bind the plays together. "Letters" is the largest collection of Chekhov’s commentary on his plays ever to appear in an English-language edition. "Criticism" includes eleven essays by leading European and Russian Chekhov scholars, most appearing in English for the first time, including those by Boris Zingerman, Maria Deppermann, and Lev Shestor. This volume also provides discussion of Chekhov’s plays by some of the twentieth century’s great directors, including Konstantin Stanislavsky, Peter Brook, and Mark Rozovsky. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.
Anton Chekhov's Selected Stories: A Norton Critical Edition
Anton Chekhov's Selected Stories contains a wide spectrum of classics and new favorites, including "Ward No. 6," "The Lady with the Little Dog," "Anna on the Neck," "The Name-Day Party," "The Kiss," An Incident at Law," and "Elements Most Often Found in Novels, Short Stories, Etc." This edition features twenty-five brand-new translations, commissioned expressly for this volume from Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Peter Constantine, Rosamund Bartlett, Michael Henry Heim, among others. Twenty translations have been selected from the published work of such master translators as Patrick Miles and Harvey Pitcher, Ann Dunnigan, and Ronald Hingley. Seven additional translations are by Constance Garnett, substantially revised by Cathy Popkin. All stories are annotated to clarify unfamiliar material and to point out differences in the translators' strategies. "Life and Letters" includes a rich selection of Chekhov's letters, some in English for the first time, some with previously redacted passages restored, as well as Aileen Kelly's portrait of Chekhov. "Criticism" explores the wide range of approaches and interpretations in two sections. "Approaches" juxtaposes five different perspectives on how to read Chekhov, represented by Peter Bitsilli, Alexander Chudakov, Robert Louis Jackson, Vladimir Kataev, and Radislav Lapushin. "Interpretations" contains ten divergent readings of stories in this edition. Case studies include Michael Finke on "At Sea"; Cathy Popkin on " A Nervous] Breakdown"; Julie de Sherbinin on "Peasant Women"; Liza Knapp on "Ward No. 6"; Robert Louis Jackson on "Rothschild's Fiddle" and "The Student"; Wolf Schmid on "The Student"; John Freedman on "Man in a Case," "Gooseberries," and "About Love"; Caryl Emerson on "A Calamity," "Anna on the Neck," "About Love," and "The Lady with the Little Dog"; and Rufus Mathewson on "The Lady with the Little Dog" and "The Beauties." A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are included, as is a postscript on the translators and their work. A special section, "Comparison Translations," gives passages from selected stories in multiple translations.

Called the greatest of short story writer, Anton Chekhov changed the genre itself with his spare, impressionistic depictions of Russian life and the human condition. Now, thirty of his best tales from the major periods of his creative life are available in this outstanding one volume edition. Included are Chekhov's characteristically brief, evocative early pieces such as "The Huntsman" from 1885, which brilliantly conveys the complex texture of two lives during a meeting on a summer's day. Four years later, Chekhov produced the tour de force "A Boring Story" (1889), the penetrating and caustic self-analysis of a dying professor of medicine. Dark irony, social commentary, and symbolism mark the stories that follow, particularly "Ward No. 6" (1892), where the tables turn on the director of a mental hospital and make him an inmate. Here, too, is one of Chekhov's best -known stories. "The Lady with the Little Dog" (1899), a look at illicit love, as well as his own favorite among his stories, "The Student," a moving piece about the importance of religious tradition.Atmospheric, compassionate, and uncannily wise, Chekhov's short fiction possesses the transcendent power of art to awe and change the reader. This monumental edition, expertly translated, is especially faithful to the meaning of Chekhov's prose and the unique rhythms of his writing, giving readers an authentic sense of his style-and, in doing so, a true understanding of his greatness. "This is an adagio reading, distinctive and fresh, that returns us to a work we thought we knew, subtly altered and so made new again."-- The Washington Post Book World on the PEN Translation Award -- Winning version of the Brothers Karamazov by Richard Peaver and Larissa Volokhonsky

The Schoolmistress and Other Stories by Anton Chekhov, Fiction, Classics, Literary, Short Stories
The Schoolmistress and Other Stories contains twenty-one tales by Russian master of drama and the short story, Anton Chekhov. Among the stories is one of Chekhov's classics, "The Bet," in which a greedy banker makes an ill-considered bet regarding capital punishment with a young and impressionable guest. Fifteen years later -- the surprise ending provides one of Chekhov's most thought-provoking tales. The title story is a careful reminder of the soul-deadening life of a teacher in the Russian countryside -- for in Russia of Chekhov's day, education was less-valued than it is today, and teachers greatly underpaid and undervalued. Chekhov was of a different social background than more aristocratic Russian authors such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Turgenev -- this offered him an insight into character that differed from theirs. A physician as well, Chekhov's observational skills are clear in this, as with all of his collections of short fiction. These stories will remind the reader of other 19th Century masters of short fiction, such as Maupassant. But their nature, and poetic irony, is exclusively that of Anton Chekhov.

The ninth title in TCG Books' Classic Russian Drama series collects seven one-act plays by master playwright Anton Chekhov. This collection reunites playwright Richard Nelson with translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky for a fresh and theatrical translation of some of Chekhov's best-loved shorter works. The title play, Swan Song, begins as a despairing monologue by an elder actor looking over a career of disappointment, but soon becomes a joyous celebration of theatrical creation once the actor recruits the theater's prompter to play supporting roles ranging from Lear's Fool to Hamlet's Guildenstern. Other plays include the much-performed The Wedding and the dramatic monologue On the Harmfulness of Tobacco. These one-acts are ideal for scene study classes and recitals, as well as for readers of classic Russian literature.

The action takes place in one of the provinces of Southern Russia. The scene is laid in TIHON'S bar. On the right is the bar-counter and shelves with bottles. At the back is a door leading out of the house. Over it, on the outside, hangs a dirty red lantern. The floor and the forms, which stand against the wall, are closely occupied by pilgrims and passers-by. Many of them, for lack of space, are sleeping as they sit. It is late at night. As the curtain rises thunder is heard, and lightning is seen through the door. TIHON is behind the counter. FEDYA is half-lying in a heap on one of the forms, and is quietly playing on a concertina. Next to him is BORTSOV, wearing a shabby summer overcoat. SAVVA, NAZAROVNA, and EFIMOVNA are stretched out on the floor by the benches

A timeless observation of the human condition from one of the best story writers in the history of world literature. Chekhov's characteristic mix of humour and poignancy united by the themes of truth, freedom, happiness and love in the 14 story collection presented in this book. Chekhov himself described his work as comic satire: 'All I wanted was to say honestly to people: 'Have a look at yourselves and see how bad and dreary your lives are!' The important thing is that people should realize that, for when they do, they will most certainly create another and better life for themselves. I will not live to see it, but I know that it will be quite different, quite unlike our present life.' 'Happiness does not exist and should not exist. And if there is purpose in life, this purpose should not be our personal happiness, it should be about something more intelligent, something more divine', commented Leo Tolstoy after reading Chekhov's trilogy included in this book. Where does love come from? How far questions of personal happiness are of consequence in love? Each story in this collection brings us close Chekhov's vision and understanding of complex human relationships.Chekhov's own relationship with Miss Avilova formed the basis for his story About Love. Miss Avilova compared Chekhov with 'busy bee who flies about and is happy to collect honey from just about anything on its way' upon publication of this story and Chekhov quickly responded to Miss Avilova, 'You are being unkind towards your busy bee. The bee first sees bright beautiful flowers and only then collects honey from them'.
