Die beiden Freunde wollen ein paar Urlaubstage verbringen. Als sie Annemarie und Selma, zwei junge Sekretärinnen, kennenlernen, treten die gemeinsamen Kriegserinnerungen hinter rasch hervorbrechender Vergnügungslust zurück. Joachim und Selma steuern in eine Romanze, die nur wenige Tage währt, sie schreiben ihre Namen ins Wasser und rudern nächtens durchs Schilf. Immer wieder jedoch durchbrechen die rotzigen Kommentare Joachims zu Christentum und Adenauerrestauration das sommerliche Idyll und tauchen die gesellschaftliche und politische Realität der 50er Jahre in unbarmherzig helles Licht. Arno Schmidt nannte das literarische Fotoalbum, das ihm 1955 ein Verfahren wegen "Pornographie" und "Gotteslästerung" eintrug, in Anspielung auf Goethe gern seine "Venezianischen Epigramme" - ein schöner Vergleich, denn bis heute haben die Einzelbilder an Farbigkeit und frecher Schärfe nichts verloren.

After spending close to 70 years in the industry I am still fascinated by people, food, taste, complains and accolades. I pay homage to my colleagues who labor behind the kitchen door, unseen and usually unknown to the customers putting your food together. They are the heroes of our industry. I talk about the pantry workers toiling away and the stewards keeping the kitchens humming. I talk about the challenges and pressures and about the sad fact that chefs create food but don't eat it themselves.

Nobodaddy's Children is a trilogy of novels that traces life in Germany from the Nazi era through the postwar years and into an apocalyptic future. Scenes from the Life of a Faun recounts the dreary life of a government worker who escapes the banality of war by researching the exploits of a deserter from the Napoleonic Wars nicknamed The Faun. Brand's Heath deals with the chaos of the immediate postwar period as a writer joins a small community of "survivors" to try to forge a new life, and Dark Mirrors is set in a future where civilization has been virtually destroyed. Dark Mirrors' narrator fears he may be the last man on earth until the discovery of another creates new fears. In ihrem Haus vermutet er rare statistische Handbücher. Eggers hat Erfolg: Er fängt ein Verhältnis mit Frieda Thumann an, und er findet die gesuchten Bücher. Mit Karl Thumann fährt er, weiterhin auf Büchersuche, nach Berlin. Er wohnt bei dessen Freundin Line Hübner im Ostteil der Stadt, was ihn veranlaßt, die Folgen der Spaltung Deutschlands zu beobachten und zu bedenken. Nach der Rückkehr bereitet er seinen Abgang vor, aber der Fund eines Goldmünzenschatzes in dem ergiebigen Haus eröffnet ihm Aussichten auf eine Zeit gelehrten Müßiggangs, und er beschließt, einstweilen zu bleiben. 'Irgendwann, in der zweiten Hälfte dieses Jahrhunderts, wird die Ostzone des Steinernen Herzens für neue Leser gleichberechtigt neben der phantastischen Interzone des Romans Naked Lunch von W. S. Burroughs stehen.
