This is the first full-length monograph in English about one of France’s most important contemporary filmmakers, perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his award-winning Les Roseaux sauvages/Wild Reeds of 1994. This study locates André Téchiné within historical and cultural contexts that include the Algerian War, May 1968 and contemporary globalisation, and the influence of Roland Barthes, Bertolt Brecht, Ingmar Bergman, William Faulkner, and the cinematic French New Wave. The originality of Téchiné’s sixteen feature films lies in his subtle exploration of sexuality and national identity, as he challenges expectations in his depictions of gay relations, the North African dimensions of contemporary French culture, and the centre-periphery relationship between Paris and especially his native southwest. The book also looks at the collaborative nature of Téchiné’s filmmaking, including his work with Catherine Deneuve, who has made more films with him than with any other director, and the role of Philippe Sarde’s musical scores.

In the first comprehensive, theoretically informed work in English on Quebec cinema, Marshall views his subject as neither the assertion of some unproblematic national wholeness nor a random collection of disparate voices that drown out or invalidate the question of nation. Instead, he shows that while the allegory of nation marks Quebec film production it also leads to a tension between textual and contextual forces, between homogeneity and heterogeneity, and between major and minor modes of being and identity. Drawing on a broad framework of theory and particularly indebted to the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Quebec National Cinema makes a valuable contribution to debates in film studies on national cinemas and to the burgeoning interest in French studies in the culture and politics of la francophonie.

Marshall demonstrates that the voice of Serge is unified by a notion of dissent - an active dissent far removed from the quietism and conservatism of other dissidents.

Tumbleweed 1 describes my successes and failures, marriages, travels, and family enjoyment. God's plans for me were evolving as I realized He was in control and protecting me. Writing this book reminded me of an actual tumbleweed blowing in the wind which is why I titled it Tumbleweed. This was followed by a total of nine months of World Travel via the sea.The self-examination of my life has been a journey of personal growth and healing for my wanderlust soul as the tumbleweed rolled along.

Event in post-independence Ghana were so intriguing that they provided ready themes for many creative exploitations. Music, poetry, novels and plays were inspired by fragments of these events. The author of these collection of plays would not be left out.
