This new book offers a coherent model of a unipolar world order.Unipolarity is usually described either as a ‘brief moment’ or as something historically insignificant. However, we have already seen nearly twenty years of virtual unipolarity and this period has been of great significance for world politics. Two issues have been crucial since the end of the Cold War: How to theorize the distinctiveness and exceptional character of a unipolar international system? And what is it like to conduct state business in a unipolar world? Until now, a comprehensive model for unipolarity has been lacking. This volume provides a theoretical framework for analysis of the current world order and identifies the patterns of outcomes and systematic variations to be expected. Terrorism and attempts by small states to achieve a nuclear capability are not new phenomena or exclusive to the current world order, but in the case of unipolarity these have become attached to the fear of marginalization and the struggle against a powerful centre without the possibility of allying with an alternative superpower.Supplying a coherent theoretical model for unipolarity, which can provide explanations of trends and patterns in the turbulent post-Cold War era, this book will be of interest to students of IR theory, international security and foreign policy.

Den 11. september 2001 bristede illusionen om det trygge Vesten. Terrorister dræbte over 5.000 mennesker med angrebene på World Trade Center og Pentagon. Manhattan lå i ruiner – og det gjorde vores illusioner også."Terrorisme. De utilfredse og den nye verdensorden" tager udgangspunkt i tragedien. Forfatteren beskriver det nye ved terroren den 11. september. Hun giver også en række bud på, hvordan terrorister tænker, hvad deres logik er, og hvorfor terrorisme opstår.I de senere år har vi set en øget islamisk-fundamentalistisk terror, men også amerikanske fanatikere har udført aktioner. Bogen argumenterer for, at begge dele hænger sammen med den verdensorden, der er blevet udbredt efter koldkrigsafslutningen, og at terroren er tabernes kamp.Den danske forfatter Birthe Hansen (f. 1960) har blandt andet arbejdet som lektor i International Politik ved Københavns Universitet og som konsulent for Dansk Udenrigspolitisk Institut. Hansen har desuden været medlem af Forsvarskommissionen (1997) og været gæsteforsker ved både The London School of Economics and Political Science og ved King‘s College (University of London). Derfor er det heller ikke usædvanligt, at det netop er inden for disse områder, at hun ligeledes har beskæftiget sig i forbindelse med sine bøger. Birthe Hansen har udgivet flere bøger om blandt andet sikkerhedspolitik, forsvar, Mellemøsten og terror.

Efter Herostratos behandler terrorisme i et teoretisk og et praktisk- politisk perspektiv. Den handler især om terrorismen i det 21. århundrede.

Hans forfatterskab og forskning er præget af en rangordning af faktorer, hvor han peger på de vigtigste faktorer i international politik, som fx krige, magtbalance, polarisering og kernevåben, og fortaber sig ikke i detaljer. Forfatter Birthe Hansen, ph.d., lektor fører læseren ind i Waltz' teori og hvordan han brugte sit strukturbegreb til at vise dynamikker i verdenspolitikken og til at forklare fx, krige, alliancer og staters tilpasning.
