The second son of a hard-as-nails Texas rancher is drafted out of college for the Vietnam war. Assigned to the Pentagon, he observes the great March on Washington protesting the war and questions why his peers are marching outside and he's inside the walls of the citadel. After his discharge, he enrolls at the University of Connecticut where he hopes to catch up with his generation. There, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Woodstock flowerchild, a beguiling, free-loving, Tinker Bell in blue jeans, who guides him through the new mores that sorely test the values he was taught growing up. After she breaks his heart, he seeks solace by returning home, and like the prodigal son, his family welcomes him and "kills the fatted calf." It's good to be home, but like the rest of the country during that time--he is forever changed. "There is definitely one, if not a couple of movies in this novel. It's not only the story of these characters in the sixties, but is also the story of the country." --The late Myron (Mike) Weinblatt, President of NBC Entertainment and Showtime/The Movie Channel "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the Sixties, and Jim Davis faces a world at odds with the one in which he grew up. Bob Holt captures the essence of the decade with his impressive debut novel that is bawdy and tender and wise as a young man reconciles his past with his future." --Mary Bryan Stafford, author of A Wasp in the Fig Tree and The Last Whippoorwill "Bob Holt offers a compelling story of Jim Davis who grows up under the controlling power of his father, a Bible-thumping Texas rancher. Holt's vivid account sets the stage for Jim's stint as a rising army lieutenant before he turns away searching for his own independence. He lands in a liberal eastern college where the counter culture opens him to a new world of experiences and a love that almost destroys him. Holt's imagery immerses his reader in Jim Davis' search for himself and his fight to capture his love." --Myra Hargrave McIlvain, Award-winning author of Stein House and The Doctor's Wife

A laugh-out-loud graphic novel story collection about a boy who just can't catch a break (or a fish ). Poor Quin. No matter what he does or where he goes, something always goes horribly - and hilariously - wrong Like when he gets chased by a swarm of seagulls shouting "Fries " Or when a plan to remove a loose tooth leaves him hanging by a kite string. Or when he goes fishing and catches ... something. But not to worry. This unlucky kid never lets the world get him down. After all, tomorrow just might be his lucky day High-energy physical comedy spills out of every panel in this three-story collection from Bob Holt. Holt is a writer, illustrator and animator who co-created Hallmark's Hoops and Yoyo, and he knows just what it takes to make kids laugh. While the nonstop action - and deadpan asides of Quin's cat - are pitch-perfect for graphic novel fans, it's Quin's endearing optimism and resilience that will keep readers turning the pages and (futilely) hoping for the best

Randy Rouse, at age, 26, tall, wavy blonde hair, business cut, blue eyes, was still looking for the love of his life. All through high school and college, his dating experiences had been less than stellar. It was better described as mundane. He'd gotten a few hits but rarely got past first base. Once, he actually hit a home run but the relationship was destined to fail. Debra came into his life and he thought that maybe she was the one. That ended when he saw Del. He was sure she was his Dark-Haired-Darling. Finally meeting, she told him about attending college in Boone, NC but, come summer, she intended spending it in Greenville, NC but it didn't happen. Her family, mainly her father, pulled her away. The summer turned into a two dates and she was gone promising to be back at summer's end. That didn't happen either. Her father had enticed her to remain with him overseas. His corporation dealt in international land and property speculation and he knew she had the gift. His sons did not. Ultimately, she chose to join the corporation. Six years later, still not dating, Randy opened his real estate office and Lisa entered into his life. She was a perfect "Girl Friday" but with her hair swept back into a twist and always wearing glasses. He had no clue how beautiful she really was. He thought her eyes were emerald green but he couldn't be sure. Finding out that she'd taken the real estate courses, saying that they could study together, he pushed her into taking the state tests which she did and passed. He immediately placed her license on the office wall beside his and Glenda's. She was now a broker in training. She was plagued by three younger roommates that were driving her nuts but finding a suitable apartment that was affordable was proving difficult. He solved her dilemma of finding a place to live offering the apartment above the garage behind his home. Realizing they were drawing closer and closer together, their friendship grew into love and they spent more and more time together. He'd pick up breakfast on most mornings and they'd eat together on the patio or at the office. More and more evenings were spent together sharing an evening meal or just enjoying the antics of Wiggles, her gray Persian cat. On their first real dinner date, he was stunned seeing her without glasses and with her beautiful long dark tresses finally untethered. Their relationship grew rapidly leading to a proposal and they were on top of the world until he made a stupid mistake...

There she was doing it again. Every time she walked out into the corridor or into the dining room, she did a complete scan looking for him and she didn't understand why. They'd never spoken or even been introduced. At 33, Lisa Ann Tripp looked nice enough, and sexy too, to command anyone's attention. She was 5 foot-6 inches tall with auburn tresses that fell on and below her shoulders, emerald eyes and a special smile that would make anyone think they were special. Yes, she was still hurting from her recent breakup but, Trey Dulany, the object of her affection, she thought she wanted him to be, worked in the employee pharmacy, on the opposite side of the long corridor, as an assistant at Vidant Medical Center. She'd done her homework knowing that he was single, and he'd been in the pharmacy 7 years. Before that, ECU and was still enrolled there. The magic happened and unbelievably, by Christmas, they were engaged to be married come next June. He'd be at VCU in Richmond, VA for 5 months finishing his degree work. Then he could take the state test and be licensed as a pharmacist. Everything was falling in place, her Mountain Man, he was from Asheville, would be hers but she made a surprise visit in late March finding him at Nate's with that woman

27 years old, her auburn hair flowing well below her shoulders, emerald eyes, lips that made you want to kiss them, size 6; she was a nice catch for the right man and she was looking for him. She'd been a nurse at Beaufort Vidant in Washington, NC for the past 7 years until 2 weeks ago. Back last spring, just before Memorial Day, Gary, she'd been dating him for almost a year, told her that it had to end and walked away leaving her dumbfounded. Nan, her next door neighbor, and best friend, helped her though it and was the first to applaud when Ruby said she was moving on with her life.Googling, she found an ad for a nurse on the outer banks. Avon, she knew where it was. It wasn't Rodanthe, but maybe her "Knight" was waiting for her there. She called and made an appointment for an interview on the Friday after Labor Day. She was hired immediately and gave her 2-week notice the following Monday. She and the movers arrived at the duplex she'd rented with the help of Dr. Covington and Jeannie, the office secretary and receptionist, a full-blooded, card carrying, Hoi'toider if there ever was one, on Saturday the 26th. That evening, hungry, she drove up to the Open Water Grill. A hunk walked in while she was eating. It turned out to be Randy Bowman, a wildlife photographer. Seeing her, he walked over introducing himself. He'd asked her out to dinner on the following Saturday but now, it was Wednesday and Hurricane Isaac was bearing down on the outer banks. What was she going to do? Her parents begged her to stay with them in Plymouth until the storm passed but Randy had fled the Crystal coast where he'd planned to spend the entire week doing photo shoots on Bear Island and Bogue Inlet knowing the ferries would shut down, he would arrive back in Avon later that night and she was having breakfast with him in the morning at Stu's . She didn't want to miss their Saturday date but Hurricane Isaac was knocking on her door.
