Flagrant Foul, as part of the Stories from the Forester series, goes beyond the Sports section and into the real-life the Brown's life, which, during the course of the season, becomes a dizzying mix of highs and lows, from falling in love to coping with his uncle's failing health.

One of: CBC’s “27 Canadian books we can't wait to read in September” CBC’s “60 works of Canadian nonfiction to watch for in fall 2022”Toronto Star's “40-plus books we’re most looking forward to this season”Is a global pandemic what it took to show us that saving our planet is possible? In the absence of motorized boats and gondolas, Venice’s waters have returned to a sparkling blue color. Deer have been spotted roaming cities in Italy, and mountain goats recently took over a small seaside town in Wales. Taking advantage of the decreased boat traffic, whales have returned to roaming Vancouver’s harbours. The absence of “regular” human activities has dramatically affected our environment. In this book, Bob McDonald turns his focus to global energy sources, and shows how the global shutdowns may have been exactly what we needed to show us that a greener future is achievable. This is not another “wake-up call,” and not another plea to heed the climate science. This is an exploration of the incredible technologies that our species can use to get out of the mess we’ve made for ourselves. It is a work of immense optimism, to counteract the sense of doom that hangs over most discussions of the environment. Many alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal have been available for decades—but they alone will not be enough. Additional power will come from small nuclear reactors the size of an office desk, and space-based solar power satellites with enormous mirrors that can capture sunlight, convert it to microwaves, and beam it to the ground to light up entire cities. Energy will be captured from waves, tides, and hydrogen. Vehicles will no longer have tailpipes that emit smog particles. Food will be sourced locally.Green technology is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, and will only continue to skyrocket as current products improve their performance and new products emerge. A new green age is upon us--let this book be your guide to the future.

It is the summer of 1995. The internet was in its infancy, cell phones were only for calling people and text messages were one-way and sent to pagers. It was also a time when the best way to get in touch with people was to write letters. This story follows the letters and journals of employees from Rock Hil Amusement Park. Throughout the summer, they share their stories of everyday life, love, loss and internal struggles about their futures. From the author of Flagrant Foul and Dilemma, The Gray Summer gives presents a number of points of view and highlights the unique personalities of each of the main characters

Spacewalking is a physically exhausting, mentally rigorous endeavor. It is so difficult, only three Canadians have ever succeeded: Chris Hadfield, Steve MacLean, and Dave Williams. Hadfield completed the first Canadian spacewalk and installed the Canadarm 2 on the International Space Station, while Williams holds the record for the longest spacewalk by a Canadian. And Steve MacLean, former head of the Canadian Space Agency, was one of Canada's original six astronauts. But what is it really like to leap out into space with only the thin fabric of your suit between you and the universe? In Canadian Spacewalkers, author Bob McDonald compiles each of the spacewalkers' perspectives and presents an extensive, one-on-one interview with spacewalkers who tell tales of training underwater in the world's largest swimming pool describe the moment when they first stepped outside. Science journalist McDonald also shares his own experiences with astronaut training: the almost-reality of simulators, the sensory deprivation of the spacesuit, and even a zero-g airplane ride. Lushly illustrated with stunning NASA photos, Canadian Spacewalkers inspires, astounds, and surprises. This is the gripping first-hand story of unique adventurers -- in their own words.

With a Foreword written by prominent Australian Christian leader, Tim Costello AO, this book combines high-quality photos of nature, interesting scientific background and Biblical reflections in a totally unique way. Readers may be drawn to see the natural world and God as perhaps they have not done so before. Forty-four stunning photographs reveal incredibly diverse aspects of God's creation-His 'first book'-inviting both appreciation and contemplation. Of these, 34 are accompanied by firstly, a background explanation with relevant scientific detail and secondly, a reflection inspired by the image. In writing the reflections, the authors, both Bible college graduates who have served in full time Christian ministry, have drawn from various parts of God's 'second book'-the Bible. The reflections consider not only what has been recorded about creation, but also about its Creator, humanity and our role and responsibilities. The text addresses such questions as is the order, precision, diversity and beauty in nature merely random or accidental? What is the purpose of nature-creation? What parables for life are there in nature? What do natural disasters, death and decay-parts of nature that cannot be ignored-mean? How should we respond to nature? What perspective should Christians bring to creation care? For people of faith, this book provides valuable insights and inspiration for daily meditation, prayer and responsible action. For those who simply love nature and recognise how significant it is, this book offers thought-provoking perspectives on beautiful images of the natural world. This book would be a great gift for such people as well as those with whom you would simply like to share, through the images, something of the sheer beauty of nature both here in Australia and elsewhere along with thoughtful text.

The story of the revolutionary Ontario Science Centre, its iconic exhibits, and the people who made it all happen. A Centennial project announced by Premier John Robarts in 1964, the Ontario Science Centre upended the traditional museum instruction — Don’t Touch — and created a whole new category of visitor attraction. Its designers, scientists, and craftspeople developed a way to explain science to the public by building mechanical devices for visitors to touch. Exhibits like the bicycle generator, and iconic demonstrations like the electricity show that made your hair stand on end, even those long escalators in that landmark building beside a Toronto ravine inspired generations of young people to pursue careers in science. The Ontario Science Centre also changed the way that traditional museums and art galleries now interpret their collections to the public, and helped create an industry around this thing called interactivity. Its legacy is the contribution that it made to the public understanding of science. That work is even more remarkable when you consider that it was created inside a government institution, under a cloud of senior managers of varying competencies, and politicians with changing agendas who closed its doors in the summer of 2024.
