Mad Mary really needs to replace her rickety old Land Rover. A new one, though, will be very expensive, so Mary decides to raise some money by taking in liveries at her smallholding. In no time there is a new occupant in one of the smallholding's two stables, a rather unfriendly mare called Susie. However, it is not Susie herself who causes Max and Tarran to feel something is not right; it's the two strange men who brought her there.Max and Tarran take their concerns to the next Spy Club meeting, where the team decide an investigation is definitely required. However, Spy Club soon runs into unexpected complications and, surprisingly, it is shy Lucy Locket who reveals a talent that comes to their aid. However, none of the members of Spy Club have any idea of the problems and dangers which will face them, once the investigation gathers pace.A new family arrives in Lower Barton, together with a potential new member for Spy Club, one who has some interesting information; information which proves to be relevant to their investigation and which sends Mangy Tom on a perilous journey across country; a journey requiring all his skill and courage to survive. It soon becomes frighteningly clear to Spy Club that Mad Mary's decision has not only put all the members of Spy Club in danger's path, but also Mad Mary herself.It seems that they may be facing a very ruthless adversary, one who is quite willing to kill.

When Toby, the Jack Russell terrier and a founder member of Spy Club,is out on one of his nighttime wanderings, he sees an unconscious man lying on the steps of Lower Barton church porch. Toby immediately seeks help and finds it in the popular local vicar, Sally. Sally offers the stranger a room at the vicarage to recuperate, but who is this man? Is what he says true or is he really someone who is actually a great deal more sinister? Spy Club's suspicions are aroused and the team decides there is definitely something which needs investigating. Before long Sally's cat, Beelzebub, brings worrying news, which appears to confirm what they fear. It is time for them to hatch a plan to guard and protect the people in the village, especially their beloved vicar. They need Pa's help more than ever before, but how can they explain their concerns to him when communication is so very difficult? Meanwhile Brian is hiding a serious problem of his own, one which shocks his friends when they finally discover what it is. Taking time out to support Blue Diamond as she races in the Embury Cup, the team are surprised to get an unexpected clue. As the animals begin to make some headway in their investigation, it becomes clear that they are involved in yet another extremely dangerous situation. All the animals in Spy Club love getting involved in each new investigation, regardless of the danger and, so far, have succeeded in solving them all. But could this one be the exception?

The village party to celebrate the engagement of Marcus Trent and the Valley Villages' popular vicar, Sally, is especially happy for Ma and Pa Dawson, as their son, Peter, has recently returned from his extended stay working on a Texan cattle ranch. His decision to become a farmer instead of an accountant, like his father and grandfather, has led to him working for the Lucases and moving to their farm in Little Longton. At the party Debbie Lucas introduces them to a young black Labrador, which has been abandoned at her boarding kennels. Peter is immediately drawn to the sweet young dog and decides to adopt her. The Spy Club animals are all keen to welcome the newcomer and make her feel at home. However, the following days are marred by break-ins and attempted dognapping, leading the members of Spy Club becoming interested in what is happening. They are determined to sort out exactly what is going on and to keep their canine friends safe. The challenge for the team is immense and, with no leads to help them, they must find out who is responsible for the strange events, what this person wants and why it is important. The involvement of a young delinquent throws some light on the situation but, unfortunately, no light at all on the why. It seems as if every solution only leads to new questions. However, the team receives some help from more than one unexpected source. It gradually becomes clear that they are dealing with a very cunning and ruthless adversary, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. The resulting showdown requires every member of the team to have their wits about them and to act speedily and with determination.
