The Moods of Ginger Mick is a collection of poems about Ginger Mick, the larrikin hero of Gallipoli. On its release it was described by the Bulletin as'finely patriotic' and 'uniquely Australian'. It articulates the Anzac legend through the verses about Mick's feats in the Dardenelles and its values of courage, mateship, nationalism and sacrifice. This new edition of The Moods of Ginger Mick, with an introduction by Philip Butterss, is a part of the Australian Classics Library series intended to make classic texts of Australian literature more widely available for the secondary school and undergraduate university classroom, and to the general reader. The series is co-edited by Emeritus Professor Bruce Bennett of the University of New South Wales and Professor Robert Dixon, Professor of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney, in conjunction with SETIS, Sydney University Press, AustLit and the Copyright Agency Limited. Each text is accompanied by a fresh scholarly introduction and a basic editorial apparatus drawn from the resources of AustLit.
The Glugs of Gosh is a satirical gallop through the world of the inhabitants of Gosh, a world that seems to be suspiciously full of the same frailties and absurdities as our own ... From the pride and petulance of kings, judges, mayors and teachers to the dangers of importing luxury goods and exporting weapons, C.J. Dennis exhibits an unerring eye for immortalising the little failings and idiosyncrasies of human nature in entertaining, rollicking verse.Published here with an introduction by John Derum and Hal Gye's original illustrations from 1917, this piquant Australian classic is fun for children and adults alike.C.J. Dennis is best known as the author of the classic The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke, as well as many other titles such as Doreen, Digger Smith, Jim of the Hills, A Book for Kids and The Moods of Ginger Mick.
First published in 1915, The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke had sold 66,000 copies during World War One and C.J. Dennis had captured the imagination of a nation. So too had Hal Gye, whose larrikin-cherubs were, and still are, accepted as the proper embodiment of The Bloke and his Doreen. It is therefore with great pleasure that we present this new Imprint edition with the original colour plates, cover, frontispiece and title page - all prepared by Hal Gye. All bring a new dimension to The Bloke, Doreen, The Stror 'at Coot and Mar - those naked, winged cherubs of immense charm and invention which enliven Dennis's salty and heart-warming verse. With a new introduction by John Derum.
