American Indian Languages

American Indian Languages

Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the 1987 publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.

1 Samuel is Volume VII of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical process so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. Antony Campbell's valuable form-critical analysis of 1 Samuel highlights both the literary development of the text itself and its meanings for its audience. A skilled student of the Hebrew scriptures and their ancient context, Campbell shows modern readers the process of editing and reworking that shaped 1 Samuel's final form. As Campbell's study reveals, the tensions and contradictions that exist in the present text reflect a massive change in the way of life of ancient Israel.Samuel, the first prophet, here emerges to preside over the rise of Saul, Israel's first king, to be the agent of Saul's rejection, and to anoint David as Israel's next king and the first established head of a royal dynasty. The book of 1 Samuel captures the work of God within this interplay of sociopolitical forces, and Campbell fruitfully explores the text both as a repository of traditions of great significance for Israel and as a paradigm of Israel's use of narrative for theological expression.

Current debates about marriage and the family assume much about the history of these institutions. But what do we really know about the social and ethical arrangements of these institutions, especially during biblical times? Placing the history of marriage and family in context requires not only a study of biblical literature that traverses several millennia but also a grasp of extrabiblical literature and sources culled from several different cultural contexts. In this book Ken M. Campbell presents the work of six scholars who trace out the dynamic contours of marriage and family as understood and practiced in six cultural settings: Victor H. Matthews on the ancient Near East, Daniel I. Block on ancient Israel, S. M. Baugh on Greek society, Susan M. Treggiari on Roman society, David W. Chapman on Second Temple Judaism and Andreas Kostenberger on the New Testament era. The result is a well informed and documented map that outlines the similarity and diversity of concepts and customs, including marriage, divorce, sexual ethics, gender roles, children, celibacy, adoption, abortion, contraception and family life, which surrounded and intersected Ancient Israel and the church in New Testament times."

This book is an argument for a particular point of view toward theatre, not a summary or survey of dramatic theory and criticism. The argument centers on the concept of form, a concept that is the rock on which all theoretical and critical works are built, or against which they shatter.

Sacred Weather

Sacred Weather

Is there such a thing as essential Irishness, something which can be experienced, invested in, and politically weaponised? Sacred Weather proposes to take this idea seriously, or literally, by proposing an objective correlative to 'Irishness' in certain atmospheric effects - or Stimmung - as these are depicted in literature, art, and film. By filtering the concept of pure pleasure, through recent writings on Marxist and affect theory by Antonio Negri, as well as the eco-critical writings of Timothy Morton, this work develops atmospheric essentialism as a theoretical template through which Irish Studies might radically, creatively, and imaginatively reconsider the idea of Irishness as an experience in itself. It does this by applying and expanding upon the operations of atmospheric essentialism in the work of the Irish novelist and short-story writer John McGahern and, in this way, proposing an equally radical intervention in current considerations of, and consensus on, the work of this writer. The readings are original, risky, and intended to start conversation.
Parents Don't Owe Their Children Nothing
This book I'm writing is about a mother who had to go through many changes with her adult girls, all the disconnections as they became adults how ungrateful and how they wanted to control me. I know our children will be children until they turn eighteen years old leaving home with their lives increasingly separate lives for ours it's a challenge when parent step back we love and support them when they go through their ups and downs but if they lose their way and their faith. We as parent feel as if we have failed with adult children they need to realize that us, as parents do everything for them without us as parent they wouldn't exit. I've read almost every motherhood and parenthood book and not one book touched on black teenager fatherless children don't get it wrong a brief description was giving however, what these teenagers and adults go though is not brief. My book will help mother spots changes accurately, asked the children and find the proper help needed for individual child. The ending played a bigger part of my life as I continue to write my book PARENTS DON'T OWE THEIR CHILDREN NOTHING book, since it was taken from the experience of my life and of my children.
