The three essays that make up this volume all deal with the labyrinths of the mind, convoluted lines of reasoning that lead to eccentric and/or dangerous practices. The goal of the book is to present three cases of this; the Nazis brooding upon the idea of "a higher kind of man", a short, literary history of misanthropy and, traits of Jewish identity and self-understanding that often appear as antics. The methodical approach is hermeneutic, relying heavily on historical, associative and linguistic analyses. The style of writing is essayistic, more personal and generalist than what is normally found in academic papers. Rather than picking a lexical definition of the phenomenon, like a psychological account of aberrations and their root causes, the text takes the longer and more scenic route of its historical manifestations and their impact on humankind. The Nazi grail takes us from an annual celebration on a mountaintop in France to the dark outlook of the ancient Gnostics and the history of those ideas up until our day of age. The essay on misanthropy, from the ancient Greeks to the sociopath predator we all know today, discusses the hatred of humankind as it inevitably adapts to the changing discourses throughout history. The investigation into the genesis and culture of the Jewish Nation, as in their manifest identity, highlights their notion of being a chosen people. An epilogue debunks some mainstream ideas about "mind" and, with that, "labyrinth", as analyzed in this book.

Reviving Nietzsches use of the ancient gods Apollo and Dionysus as notions for seeing the emergence, growth, and imminent and final decay of Western culture, Carlos Wiggen goes through the historical process by way of selected interpretations of this cultures drama, thought, and social structure. Is the spine of a radically new culture already forming? If so, what is its essence?

Meanwhile, the sub had gone from tail up to nose up and kept sinking slowly at a thirty-degree angle. The tail hit the barren stone plain first, crushing the planes and screws. Then, the boat settled on its keel in a horizontal position, resting on the three beams that were still in place under the belly. The Helena descended on an even keel. "I've got her on sonar," Benny reported, "belly landing." "Put us next to her," Martin said, striving to speak clearly. Chris, Van, Greg, Rainer, Young, Woo, Huang, Brian--all the others were in shock.

After the flood 7 Charybdis, part of After The Flood, is a volume with related stories dealing with what happens on the mainland parallel to the dramas on the coasts and at sea and, the characters involved in them. The story lines are kind of a puzzle and require a good memory. Toward the end, the two main lines melt together and, forge the last part of this section, preparing the reader for the conclusion of the epic: "The Boat People."
