"Nobody I ever met on my assignments ...asked me for direct, practical help...But over and over again people have asked me: 'Will you write this down?' "--Echoes of Violence Echoes of Violence is an award-winning collection of personal letters to friends from a foreign correspondent who is trying to understand what she witnessed during the iconic human disasters of our time--in Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and New York City on September 11th, among many other places. Originally addressing only a small group of friends, Carolin Emcke started the first letter after returning from Kosovo, where she saw the aftermath of ethnic cleansing in 1999. She began writing to overcome her speechlessness about the horrors of war and her own sense of failure as a reporter. Eventually, writing a letter became a ritual Emcke performed following her return from each nightmare she experienced. First published in 2004 to great acclaim, Echoes of Violence in 2005 was named German political book of the year and was a finalist for the international Lettre-Ulysses award for the art of reportage. Combining narrative with philosophic reflection, Emcke describes wars and human rights abuses around the world--the suffering of civilians caught between warring factions in Colombia, the heartbreaking plight of homeless orphans in Romania, and the near-slavery of garment workers in Nicaragua. Freed in the letters from journalistic conventions that would obscure her presence as a witness, Emcke probes the abyss of violence and explores the scars it leaves on landscapes external and internal.

Racism, extremism, anti-democratic sentiment – our increasingly polarized world is dominated by a type of thinking that doubts others’ positions but never its own. In a powerful challenge to fundamentalism in all its forms, Carolin Emcke, one of Germany’s leading intellectuals, argues that we can only preserve individual freedom and protect people’s rights by cherishing and celebrating diversity. If we want to safeguard democracy, we must have the courage to challenge hatred and the will to fight for and defend plurality in our societies. Emcke rises to the challenge that identitarian dogmas and populist narratives pose, exposing the way in which they simplify and distort our perception of the world. Against Hate is an impassioned call to fight intolerance and defend liberal ideals. It will be of great interest to anyone concerned about the darkening politics of our time and searching for ways forward.

How should we talk about desire, power and equality in the wake of the #Me Too debate? For Carolin Emcke, bestselling author and winner of the German Peace Prize, the debate demonstrates one thing above all: a conversation about abuse and sexuality has emerged that can no longer be stifled. Too many questions remain unanswered: which images and concepts shape our imaginings of desire and revulsion? How is violence exposed and obstructed? How do the norms and structures into which men, women and those in between must fit get constructed? What gets hushed up, and who remains powerless? How can the plurality of desire and sexuality be expressed, without sacrificing their intricacies? By interrogating her own experiences as well as social practices, music and literature, Emcke demonstrates the enduring complexity of the relationship between sexuality and truth.

In this direct and brilliant essay, the scholar Carolin Emcke reflects on the great issues of today: radicalism, racism, and growing distrust, if not hostility, towards democracy. Racism, extremism, anti-democracy ... in a public forum that is becoming increasingly more polarized, a thought process is being imposed that only questions the opinions of others and never our own. To this rigid approach, Carolin Emcke -winner of the German booksellers Peace prize and one of the most interesting European intellectuals of her generation- contrasts a devoted tribute to the diverse and the "impure." The answer to our current problems cannot be simply left to politicians, because we are all responsible for fighting against all daily forms of hatred and deprecation. Democracy is only possible if we are strong enough to face hatred.

”Vihan voi kohdata vain kieltäytymällä vihan kutsusta. Joka vastaa vihaan vihalla, on jo lähtenyt muuttumaan siihen suuntaan, johon vihaaja pyrkii häntä viemään.”Saksalainen kirjailija Carolin Emcke käsittelee tämän hetken suuria teemoja: rasismia, fanatismia, demokratian vastaisuutta.
