Der zweite Band gesammelter Studien des Münchener Alttestamentlers umfasst 17 Aufsätze. Ein Schwerpunkt des Bandes liegt auf der Hermeneutik und Theologie des Alten Testaments. Weitere Arbeiten befassen sich mit der Redaktionsgeschichte des Pentateuchs, der Königebücher, der prophetischen Bücher und der Psalmen. Eingehende literaturgeschichtliche Analysen sind Kapiteln aus den Büchern Genesis, Könige und Jona gewidmet.

Das Bild der Geschichte des alten Israel hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark gewandelt. Abhängig von den Ergebnissen der literaturgeschichtlichen Arbeit am Alten Testament hat sich die traditionelle Datierung mancher biblischen Quellen verändert. Daraufhin müssen Schlüsselereignisse neu datiert werden, wenn ihre Historizität nicht überhaupt in Frage steht. Die Archäologie Palästinas hat zu einer vertieften Kenntnis der Entwicklung im Lande geführt. Der Bestand an althebräischen Inschriften hat sich nicht unerheblich vermehrt. Auch die Erforschung der Literaturen in Israels altorientalischer Umgebung ist vorangeschritten. Vergleicht man diese Texte mit dem Alten Testament, stellen sie die traditionelle Auffassung von einer Sonderstellung Israels teilweise in Frage. Christoph Levins „Entwurf einer Geschichte Israels“ untersucht daher folgende Gesichtspunkte: Welche Quellen stehen für die Geschichte Israels zur Verfügung? Wie lassen sich die Epochen der Geschichte Israels bestimmen? Welche Strukturen waren für die Geschichte Israels maßgebend? Welche Bedeutung kommt der Geschichte Israels zu?Dabei bewährt sich Wellhausens fundamentale Unterscheidung von „Judentum und altem Israel in ihrem Gegensatze“ und gewinnt überraschende Aktualität.

This volume contains 15 papers written by Christoph Levin between 2001 and 2011, four of them unpublished. One main focus is on the Pentateuch, mainly on the oldest comprehensive narrative source, the Yahwist, which was written at the beginning of the Jewish diaspora. One paper gives an outline of the features of this source as they emerge resulting from an inquiry into their redaction history. In addition the full text of the Yahwist's history is given in an English translation, the sources used by the editor being distinguished from the editorial text. Other papers deal with single stories of the Yahwist's history, such as the narrative of creation and fall in Gen 2-3, the story of Joseph's fate in Egypt in Gen 39, the story of the call of Moses in Exod 3, and the story of the miracle at the sea in Exod 14. A second focus is on the books of Kings, on their chronological structure as well as on the final two chapters 2 Kgs 24-25. The author deals with the prophetical books, in particular with the theology of the word of God in the book of Jeremiah and with the day of Yahweh within the book of Zephaniah. He also studies the Israelite religion in the time of the monarchy, the origins of biblical Covenant theology, and the Old Testament attitude to poverty. All the papers are based on a detailed investigation into the literary growth of the biblical text. The author shows that the Old Testament as we know it originated from a process of continual re-reading during the Second Temple period.

Ausgehend von der nach wie vor aktuellen Kontroverse zwischen Systematischer Theologie und alttestamentlicher Exegese gibt Christoph Levin einen pointierten Überblick über das geänderte Bild der Religionsgeschichte Israels und Judas, wie es aus den neueren Ergebnissen der Bibelwissenschaft hervorgeht. Die Darstellung beruht auf zahlreichen Einzelstudien des Verfassers und verknüpft deren Ergebnisse mit Einsichten sowohl der klassischen als auch der neueren und neuesten Forschung. Sie verfolgt die Entwicklung der alttestamentlichen Religion des Judentums in der persischen und hellenistischen Zeit und benennt die Folgen für die christliche Lesart der Bibel. Das Buch bietet damit eine Anleitung zum Verstehen des Alten Testaments im gesamtbiblischen Zusammenhang. Die gut lesbare Darstellung setzt keine Vorkenntnisse voraus. Sie wendet sich außer den Bibelwissenschaftlern und den Dogmatikern an einen weiteren Leserkreis, der sich für die Theologie des Alten Testaments und die biblische Hermeneutik interessiert. Sie eignet sich im akademischen Unterricht für Einführungen und Repetitorien.
