The Phenomenology of Audio Drama

The Phenomenology of Audio Drama

Audio drama is overlooked by philosophy even though it raises many philosophical questions. It seems to be a contradiction: drama is a form of showing yet the exemplary form of showing a world—visual representation—is absent from it. What kinds of world do we find if we concentrate on what is revealed through sound and the voice? According to fans of the medium, ‘the best pictures are in the head’ but might its potency be more fully realized if we consider that the best pictures are in the body? This book shows how phenomenology addresses these questions and provides new ways of theorizing audio drama. It transpires that the phenomenologist and the audio dramatist share the same predicament: how is a world going to make itself apparent to us or to our audience when our materials—sound and the voice—are only available when we are active and noisy in our environment? The book gives a clear account of phenomenology’s rethinking of embodiment, technology and causality, and how it enables the drawing of relations between audio drama, sound art and audio fiction. Instead of contradiction, sound and the voice emerge as principal expressions of dramatic structure and human being-in-the-world, and audio drama is shown to be an art form that manifests the power of causality to enrich aesthetic sensibility. The Phenomenology of Audio Drama will appeal to philosophers working in aesthetics and modern European philosophy, and to theorists and practitioners within the fields of audio drama, sound art and performance.
Metaphor and Continental Philosophy
Over the last few decades there has been a phenomenal growth of interest in metaphor as a device which extends or revises our perception of the world. Clive Cazeaux examines the relationship between metaphor, art and science, against the backdrop of modern European philosophy and, in particular, the work of Kant, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty. He contextualizes recent theories of the cognitive potential of metaphor within modern European philosophy and explores the impact which the notion of cognitive metaphor has on key positions and concepts within aesthetics, epistemology and the philosophy of science.

Art, Research, Philosophy explores the emergent field of artistic research: art produced as a contribution to knowledge. As a new subject, it raises several questions: What is art-as-research? Don’t the requirements of research amount to an imposition on the artistic process that dilutes the power of art? How can something subjective become objective? What is the relationship between art and writing? Doesn’t description always miss the particularity of the artwork? This is the first book-length study to show how ideas in philosophy can be applied to artistic research to answer its questions and to make proposals for its future. Clive Cazeaux argues that artistic research is an exciting development in the historical debate between aesthetics and the theory of knowledge. The book draws upon Kant, phenomenology and critical theory to show how the immediacies of art and experience are enmeshed in the structures that create knowledge. The power of art to act on these structures is illustrated through a series of studies that look closely at a number of contemporary artworks. This book will be ideal for postgraduate students and scholars of the visual and creative arts, aesthetics and art theory. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorandfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781315764610
