Slott Canyon, the new novel from award-winning author Dan Baldwin, traces the lives of a handful of people trying to survive in a new land. Their stories meet, diverge, then come together again, entwining their lives and the reader in an epic tale of love, hate, loss and revenge. As with his Caldera Trilogy, Dan makes the panorama of the Southwest a character of his story. It is the landscape's unseen hand that shapes the lives of every person willing to face the maelstrom head on. Dan's prose is stark and beautiful at the same time. The reader can feel the dirt and grit that each player experiences in his tale.

Desecration: Book 1The life of a college professor of anthropology in a northwest Louisiana college was a breeze for Dr. Ashley "Ash" Hayes. Her most troublesome challenge is an emotional battle fought among those who want to study Native American artifacts, those who want to protect them, and those who want to desecrate ancient burial sites to steal them. That life is brutally interrupted when police detective "Bummer" LaSalle drags her into the investigation of a sadistic serial killer because he needs someone who can "think Indian." When the sun goes down and the world goes dark can Ash, armed only with her two hands and keen mind, survive the inevitable assault of a mad man?Heresy: Book 2Dr. Ashley "Ash" Hayes is driven to prove that America was explored by Europeans well before Columbus - a quest that is heresy to the members of her northwest Louisiana academic community. Her quest is interrupted by the disappearance of a friend who has headed into the hills and swamps in search of Native American treasure. She drops everything to help find her friend and is aided by the missing man's brother, a tall and handsome transplanted Apache. The search is complicated by a series of grisly murders which are connected to the brother's disappearance. They find the brother, the killer and someone far more deadly. They also find romance, the treasure and a profound mystery. But will Ash survive to tell the story?Vengeance: Book 3Dr. Ashley "Ash" Hayes, professor of archaeology at a prestigious Louisiana college, is in danger of losing her job because of her controversial and outspoken beliefs about the history of man in North America. Unexpected and not-so-welcome help comes from a mortal enemy, a former state senator who years earlier was forced to resign due to Ashley uncovering his illegal dealing in Native American artifacts. He wants to make amends by using his still considerable influence if she will use her skills to help him locate a fortune in lost Confederate arms. For the same reasons, Deputy Sheriff Tate Dawson enlists her aid in tracking a crazed serial killer who is seeking another historical treasure - the lost fortune of gunman Cullen Montgomery Baker. As matters deteriorate, Ashley's career rests on her locating a bizarre letter penned by President Abraham Lincoln which is being sought by an old and mysterious organization known as The Brothers of the Law. The questors, the mysteries and the killer intersect in a violent confrontation at a lakeside mansion. Will Ashley lose her job or will she lose more than that - her life?

Sparky and the King takes readers to the sleazy and dark corners of the 1960s Louisiana/Texas Gulf coast. Fidel Castro has just taken over Cuba, Jack Kennedy is in the White House, Organized Crime is moving in on the rock 'n roll industries and Elvis Presley is preparing a comeback concert at the famous Louisiana Hayride now that he is out of the army. Enter Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby who is sent on a secret mission by the mob to stop the local Klan in Shreveport, Louisiana and their hired international killer from assassinating "the King," who they believe is a threat not only to their families, but to the entire nation. Ruby's real challenge is finding a way to accomplish his mission and live to return to Dallas once his mission is complete because the mob kingpin hiring him believes that "three can keep a secret if two of them are dead."

Sparky and the Beard dips into those hazy, almost forgotten days of pre-Vietnam ... the 1950s. The unlikely hero is Sparky from Chicago. Born Jacob Rubenstein, he is better known by his adopted name, Jack Ruby, the infamous killer of President Kennedy's alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Dan Baldwin takes historical facts and weaves a fast-paced novel of intrigue, deception and murder, framed around the overthrow of dictator Fulgencio Batista and Fidel Castro's revolution as he increases his communist stranglehold on the island paradise of Cuba. Under Baldwin's masterful storytelling, Sparky and the Beard is an enjoyable, nerve-wracking experience. Like Sparky, the reader doesn't know who to trust, who will live or how the protagonist will get out of Cuba. History has judged Jack Ruby harshly (though many consider his actions in Dallas in 1963 as justified.) Perhaps Dan's most significant accomplishment in Sparky is his ability to craft the character of Jack Ruby into a sympathetic, even heroic, individual and take the reader and Ruby through compelling twists and turns.
