We all have visions of the ideal community--where respect and justice guide our actions and relationships. But the heart of community renewal has almost been lost in a complex professional superstructure, to the point of discouraging many who would like to get involved. Living Community provides a beacon of hope and practical guidance for the aspiring--and struggling--community worker. This simple introductory course spells out the principles and the skills involved in building those better communities. It has been written for use in study groups or by individuals, in many diverse settings: community level, college, and university. It will be invaluable as a guide for those new to the field, as well as for already experienced fieldworkers. The book offers a searching analysis of the isolation that plagues society, and provides a critical to-do list of issues that community workers will face, with emphasis on breaking down the barriers and building bridges. It considers the vocational, ethical, cultural and legal frameworks of community work, and outlines the skills required to work for change in the local community: researching, communicating, planning, project submission, and others.

Synopsis: Examples of people around the world and throughout history who have embodied Christ-like compassionate community work. Endorsements: 'Are you looking for some inspiration to lead a life worthy of Christ? Dave Andrews' People of Compassion may be the book for you The collection of forty of these biographies into one volume provides a valuable source of encouragement and instruction by example in the area of compassion. The focus is on the way in which each person advocated for justice and defended the poor. There is something to learn in every profile. The 'Suggestions for Meditation' section at the conclusion of each biography is helpful. A great resource for personal reflections, group studies, sermon illustrations, and children's talks.' - Cheryl Catford, Australian Evangelical Alliance "People of Compassion is a collection of forty stories about ordinary people throughout history who have embodied Christ's extraordinary spirit of compassion . . . The book is no ordinary collection of the saints because, rather than focusing on gruesome martyrdoms, bleeding statues, etc., Andrews has presented these people as genuine people who listened to God's word and acted accordingly. Andrews has presented a wide selection of men and women from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds. I could relate to many of the people in the stories, and found this a source of personal inspiration to act with greater compassion. People of Compassion is a little book of hope that we all can make this world a better place. It would be a wonderful book for a minister, for individual reflection and for group study." - Naomi Waldron, Journey Magazine Author Biography: Dave Andrews is an Australian Christian anarchist author, speaker, social activist, and community worker who, along with his wife, Ange, and their family have lived and worked in intentional communities with marginalized groups of people in Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India for over forty years. Along with friends, Dave and Ange started Aashiana, Sahara, and Sharan--three Christian community organizations working with slum dwellers, sex workers, and people with HIV/AIDS in India. He is also a part of Waiters Union, an inner-city Christian community network working with Indigenous Australians, refugees and people with disabilities in Australia. Dave is also an Elder for Servants to Asia's Urban Poor, an educator for TEAR Australia, a Christian international aid and development agency, and a lecturer at the University of Queensland and Christian Heritage College.

Plan Be is a simple practical easy-to-use manual for a do-it-yourself global ethical revolution. In this book Dave Andrews rescues the 'beatitudes' from their obscurity as a poetic introduction to Jesus' sermon on the Mount, and reframes them as a set of radical 'Be-Attitudes' that we can use as a life-changing framework for 'being the change we want to see in the world'. In 8 concise punchy chapters Dave unpacks the hidden dynamics in the 8 Be-Attitudes and shows us how they can help us reshape our personal-political worlds. "When I met Dave Andrews a few years ago, I could feel the fire burning in him. Then I heard him speak. Then I read his books. Ever since, he has been and continues to be a major inspiration for my life and work... . I think Plan Be will be his most widely - read book yet." - Brian McLaren, author and activist
