The usual route into Engineering comes through the gaining of specific Engineering qualifications at University level. The A level candidate will probably have studied Maths, Physics and D&T in secondary school. In recent years students have been increasingly opting for vocational career pathways and this includes into Engineering. Therefore the teaching of the skills required by an engineer, should not be saved for further education but should be interwoven into the teaching and learning of STEM subjects at the secondary school level. Cross curricular Engineering requires all STEM subjects to look at their own classroom practice and develop learning experiences that require creative, practical hands on problem solving, using materials to produce a desired outcome. This book is a collection of Physics experiments that require the student to solve problems using Engineering.

This workbook provides a wealth of problems and activities to support the learning of anybody studying GCSE or IGCSE Physics (9-1). Each chapter provides activities which range in difficulty from simple vocabulary use to problem solving that will stretch the most able in the classroom. This is a guide for the student and a resource for the teacher. To enable our students to stand under the spotlight of competition the science department at Wreake Valley Academy endeavoured to create a science conference. The event would draw upon the participation of every student studying Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics A level subjects. This book contains 20 investigations. Each one is based around a mechanics topic and should be taught alongside lessons where problem solving is rehearsed. Each investigation takes somewhere between one and three hours to complete. Each investigation has been tested on several classes of A-level students. Most of these experiments require no technology and can be taught with little more than a few weights, some string and a box of stopwatches. Many schools are finding that much of their physics apparatus budget over the last twenty years has been spent on data loggers that are now incompatible with modern computers. These experiments can be conducted with next to no kit. Perhaps the most rewarding thing about these experiments is that they were enjoyed by the students. Physics isn't physics unless things are flying across the room, popping up in the air or vibrating away noisily in a corner. These experiments make mastering physics fun.

David was always meant to explore the back roads of the American southwest. For him, the more remote, the better; and the more beautiful, the more intellectually enticing. He always wanted to see for himself what those empty places on the map actually looked like. As a teenager, he hiked across Yosemite, harvested crops up the coast, and climbed major peaks in three states. As a Navajo speaker, he spent many years on the Indian Reservation, as a missionary and as a trader. Back in Utah, he began studying the geology of the Colorado Plateau. He has worked many jobs, including small business owner, miner, prospector, and assayer. But the job of geologist/tour guide for the local university was meant for him. A visitor on one of his tours described him as ..".an inspiring example of a person following his interests until he found his calling." True, David feels that sharing the southwest is his destiny. If he could live anywhere he wanted, he would choose southern Utah.
