The Music and Thought of Michael Tippett

The Music and Thought of Michael Tippett

Tippett is often cast as a composer with a strong visionary streak, but what does that mean for a twentieth-century artist? In this multi-faceted study, David Clarke explores Tippett's complex creative imagination - its dialogue between a romantic's aspirations to the ideal and absolute, and a modernist's sceptical realism. He shows how the musical formations of works such as The Midsummer Marriage, King Priam, and The Vision of Saint Augustine resonate with the aesthetic and theoretical ideas of key figures in modern Western culture - some known to have been influential to the composer (such as Jung, Wagner and Yeats), others not usually associated with him (such as Kant, Nietzsche and Adorno). Analyses of late works such as the Triple Concerto and Byzantium also speculate on Tippett's sexuality as a (literally) critical element in his creative and political consciousness.

In this three-part study of the serious plays that Corneille wrote between 1630 and 1643, David Clarke first explores the Norman experience and identity of the dramatist himself. A second section reviews the principles and distinctiveness of his poetics in a period when literary activity, and particularly historical drama, became increasingly subject to central government pressures. The third and final section discusses the political and tragic significance of Corneille's plays and seeks to re-establish a link between their reflection of contemporary ideological tensions and the 'collective mind' of their intended audience with reference to popular, but now little-read, contemporary moralists and political theorists.

Reflections on the Astronomy of Glasgow

Reflections on the Astronomy of Glasgow

How Astronomy contributed to the educational enlightenment of Glasgow, to its society and to its commerce. The words 'Astronomy' and 'Glasgow' seem an incongruous juxtaposition, and yet the two are closely linked over 500 years of history. This is a tale of enlightenment and scientific progress at both institutional and public levels. Combined with the ambitions of civic commerce, it is a story populated with noteworthy personalities and intense rivalries. It is remarkable to realise that the first Astronomy teaching in the Glasgow 'Colledge' presented an Earth-centred Universe, prior to the Copernican revolution of the mid sixteenth Century. Glasgow was later known astronomically for the telescope observations of sunspots made by Wilson in the 1760s, but less well known are the ideas related to mono-chromaticity within light, to dew point and hoar frost, and Herschel's discovery of infra-red energy in solar radiation by application of Glasgow-made thermometers. This engrossing and entertaining scientific history includes the story of Glasgow's 'Big Bang' of 1863, the controversy over 'Astronomer Royal for Scotland' and a historical survey of the eight observatories that once populated Glasgow. David Clarke brings us a complex weave of science and accompanying social history in this unique and fascinating work. It is a comprehensive narrative of 500+ years of Glasgow's connections with Astronomy. Contributions made to Astronomy directly by Glasgow University, and new ideas developed there and picked up by others outside its walls are related. It provides short biographies of colourful contributors to the Astronomical scene in Glasgow. It presents the history, architecture and structures of eight Glasgow observatories. It gives insight on social aspects of Astronomy within Glasgow, its relationships with commerce, and the upsurge of interests in Astronomy by the general public.

Guinevere Cuckoo is the second book from the Bristol Wood Enchanted Forest series. Starting with Joanella, a Faeries Tale, Guinevere Cuckoo continues with stories of pixies, gnomes, and faeries that explore their relationship with their forest animal neighbors in a gritty, almost urban-like setting. Humor spiked with sex, strong language, and violence punctuate every moment in this story where Gwen and her best friend, a fox named Winston, meet up with a pixie searching for pixie dust and start a quest that spirals into mistrust and tragedy in this grimdark tale of the struggles of life in Bristol Wood. As with Joanella, three side stories are introduced and act as an intermission from the main tale. This volume can be read on its own, but reading Joanella first will make it much richer.

This publication, relating to the Sabbath, is produced to help Christians who have been troubled by those seeking to bind them to the keeping of the Sabbath day, as given by Moses. Since the Reformation there has been much debate and discussion on the subject of the Sabbath Day and Lord's Day and whether the 10 Commandments are the binding rule of conduct on all men. This publication seeks to point out Law of Moses is not the rule of life for the believer but the Gospel of Christ is that rule. This is not strange, or odd but have been held by many faithful ministers of the gospel historically, including Calvin, Tyndale, Bunyan, Gill, Huntington. Although they may differ in their expressions I maintain that the term first day of the week and it being the Christian Sabbath it wrong and I invite you to write the conclusion after you have read the follow articles. Reason for the publication On my return from a full time Christian mission trip to the Philippines, in 2003, I sought to fellowship with Strict and Particular Baptists in England, but soon discovered a problem as I was informed that I would not be accepted as a member of any Gospel Standard Strict Baptist Church, holding the views that I had, with respect to the Sabbath. An account of this encounter is told in Appendix 1, A Rest For The People Of God, at the end of this book.
The Fall, Desperation and Recovery.
This is the continuing story of David Clarke in which he tells of his encounter with great conflicts of conscience, whilst at the Bierton Strict and Particular Baptists Church, after when he seceded, in 1984, over matters of conscience. For three years he wondered what the future held for him and wondered about the direction that he should go. This led him to severe depression, thinking that God had rejected him, and then to a desperate state of mind resulting in him turning away from God and to open sin. This is the continuing story of David's life as told in his book, "Converted on LSD Trip 4th Edition," and relates the journey that led to his fall, divorce, the desperation, recovery and restoration to faith in Christ. He then tells of his encounter with so called Elders of a Christian Church who wished to appoint women as elders, and of his subsequent actions, and writing an account in his book Mary, Mary Quite Contrary. He tells of the good news he received in 1998 of his brother Michael and his conversion from crime to Christ, that took place 5 years into a 16-year prison sentence, in the Philippines. This was 30 years after David's own conversion from crime to Christ, which was the moving factor behind publishing his book, "Converted on LSD Trip." David believes this book will be very useful for people who too may have turned from God, in unbelief, and of the road of recovery, to any of all ages who wish to see the hand of God at work and in particular for those learning the Christian faith.
Converted On LSD Trip 5th Edition
The book was originally published on the 11th of February 2001 whilst I was a lecturer at Fareham Collage in the UK, and it has gone through various additions and formates, for various reasons. In the first edition the introduction started by stating, 'David Clarke is currently a lecturer at Fareham college teaching electronics has taught there since 1989. However since leaving Dover Borstal in 1968 he had a three-year career of undetected crime, until the 16th of January, 1970 when he experienced a Christian conversion from crime to follow Christ, whilst suffering from the effects of LSD. Since his conversion he continued his education by learning to read as he was virtually illiterate, by using the bible and classical Christian literature. He then trained to be a lecturer, at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, and graduated with a Cert Ed awarded by Birmingham University, and commenced teaching at Luton college of higher education in 1978. Since that time, he has taught hundreds of students during his 21 years as a lecture at colleges and Higher and Further Education. In 1990 David turned away from God, for a short period of time, in unbelief and went through divorce and a remarriage. However, he returned to God in faith and repentance and since 1994 has spoken to many of his friends all about what Jesus had done for him. In this part of my life I tell of my recovery after a fall into open sin and written as a testimony for any who find themselves in that situation. David believes it is now time to complete his student's education he now wishes to make known to all his former friends, and students, and their friends that his bad experience on LSD is nothing compared to what hell is like. He wants to tell them all about the salvation Jesus came to give men and that men may be saved by through faith in Jesus Christ and that like Oskar Schindler, and his list, all that were on that list were saved so to this David has a list of over 250 students and friends who he's seeking and will be contacting shortly as he wishes to persuade them to listen and hear, in full, of all what Jesus had done for him.
