Housing Law and Policy

Housing Law and Policy

David Cowan

Palgrave Macmillan
1999
nidottu
Housing Law and Policy goes beyond the usual sources of law in innovative ways. The author draws on socio-legal, economic and broader housing research in this critique of the development of both housing law and housing policy. In the three sections of the book he discusses the regulatory crisis affecting each housing tenure, access to housing, and finally individual housing rights in the context of a shift towards individual responsibility. The book takes an approach which is at once political, discursive and argumentative and will appeal to both students and professionals in the field.
Homelessness

Homelessness

David Cowan

Routledge

sidottu
First published in 1997, this volume presents the results of in-depth research into the application of the UK homelessness legislation in relation to community care, the Children Act 1989, violence to women, and racial harassment. This is supplemented with a consideration of policies and practices in 15 local authority homelessness departments. It is argued that government created the nation of a successful, or "appropriate" applicant, but this could not be translated into actual practice as the original legislation did not facilitate it. In fact, in the mid-1990s, government became more concerned with notions of inappropriateness, stereotyping those using the homelessness legislation and creating modern "folk devils". This was the background to the 1996 changes to the homelessness legislation which have created the notion of the "inappropriate" applicant. It is argued that the new legislation is more concerned with denial, deterrence and privatization. The new legislation has also detrimentally affected the application of the homelessness legislation in each of the areas discussed.

An Introduction to Modern Literary Arabic

An Introduction to Modern Literary Arabic

David Cowan

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
The lessons are clear, in non-technical language, and have generous examples, with plenty of exercises for translation from Arabic to English and from English to Arabic. This is the manual that students interested in Arabic as a living and expanding world language will prefer. It is the first to deal mainly with modern literary Arabic. In Mr Cowan’s words: ‘The purpose is to explain to the students, in as concise a manner as possible, the grammatical structure of the modern Arabic literary language as it is found today in newspapers, magazines, books, the radio, and public speaking. I have endeavoured to restrict the material to the minimum which may serve as a stepping-stone to a deeper study of Arabic. As the fundamental grammar of written Arabic has hardly changed as an introduction to the classical language also. Having once mastered its contents the student should have a sound grasp of Arabic grammar and can then direct his studies towards modern literature or classical according to his needs and inclinations.

An innovative and timely guide to housing law that integrates the disciplines of law and public policy so that readers see how the subject fits together – both the letter of the law and the way it is practised. The innovative three-part structure covers all the topics of a typical Housing Law module and it is written in a clear and conversational style, with a wide range of source material to show how the law is created, interpreted and used in real life. Students are expertly guided through the complexities of housing law by a leading academic who has taught the subject for more than 20 years. Where relevant, chapters end with a section on 'the future' that discusses proposed changes to the law and the impact of those changes. It also discusses the conceptual issues raised by the Human Rights Act.

Economic Parables

Economic Parables

David Cowan

Inter-Varsity Press,US
2007
nidottu
Using his vast experience in the financial world as well as church ministry, the author invites you to listen directly to the words of Jesus and reflect on a number of economic parables to understand life in an increasingly globalized economy. Some of the answers you find will be surprising, in part because Jesus was a more sophisticated economist than he is given credit for. His words will shed light on many modern economic problems and decisions we may not think to go to the Bible about. By taking this journey through the economic parables, your response to finances and the global marketplace will be enriched from a balanced biblical approach. Each chapter contains a parable and reflection, followed by a question making this book ideal for group or personal Bible study.
Politics of the Past

Politics of the Past

The inter-war period (1918–1939) is still remembered as a period of mass deprivation – the 'hungry thirties'. But how did this impression emerge? Thousands of conversations about life in the inter-war period – between parents and children around the dinner table; among workmates at the pub – shaped these understandings. In turn, these fed into popular politics. Stories about the embryonic welfare system in the early-twentieth century informed how people felt towards the National Health Service; memories of the Great Depression shaped arguments about state intervention in the economy. Challenging accounts of widespread political disengagement in the twentieth century, Politics of the Past shows how re-telling family stories about the inter-war period offered ordinary people an accessible way of engaging in politics. Drawing on six local case studies across Scotland and England, this book explains how stories about the inter-war working-class experience in industrial areas came to appear commonplace nationwide.

This book argues for the reconsideration of Frank Knight and the Chicago School of Economic thought in a post-Financial Crisis world. The author posits that the discussion of the founder of "Knightian Uncertainty" can reveal new insights into what the economy can do for society, as his prophetic insights can offer a view into the soul of the modern economy. The book first considers Frank Knight's early history and the unfolding of his economic philosophy before going on to evaluate his enduring legacy. All those interested in the influence of political and religious philosophy on economics will be delighted to discover the lasting impact of this great economic thinker.

Ley Lines and Earth Energies

Ley Lines and Earth Energies

David Cowan

Adventures Unlimited Press
2003
nidottu
The mysterious standing stones, burial grounds and stone circles that lace Europe, the British Isles and other areas have intrigued scientists, writers, artists and travellers through the centuries. They pose so many questions: Why do some places feel special? How do ley lines work? How did our ancestors use Earth energy to map their sacred sites and burial grounds? How do ghosts and poltergeists interact with Earth energy? How can Earth spirals and black spots affect our health? This exploration shows how natural forces affect our behaviour, how they can be used to enhance our health and well being, and ultimately, how they bring us closer to penetrating one of the deepest mysteries being explored. A fascinating and visual book about subtle earth energies and how they affect us and the world around them.
The Coming Economic Implosion of Saudi Arabia

The Coming Economic Implosion of Saudi Arabia

David Cowan

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
nidottu
The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is at a crossroads economically, and faces the challenge of a weakening economy that could implode before 2030, the year set as a timetable by the kingdom in its Vision 2030. How it navigates its way out of these economic troubles demands understanding a complex of religious, political and economic factors, which currently makes it one of the most unpredictable states in the world and, by the same token, one of the most fascinating. The problem of the Saudi economy cannot simply be argued economically, it needs political and religious solutions as well. Cowan takes a behavioural approach to analysing the Saudi economy. Predicting an implosion under the weight of its own ideologically-fuelled economy if it does not reset its agenda, this interdisciplinary book provides important insights into Saudi Arabia's position in the Islamic world and global economy.
