Drawing on a wide and rich array of sources, this book explores the nature and extent of Dutch trade and commerce in the Río de la Plata during three decades of the least-studied century (1650–1750) of Spain's rule in the Americas. In doing so, it raises important questions about trade in colonial South America and how it was impacted by the Dutch, suggesting that these transactions were carried out within the confines of the law, contradicting common beliefs among scholars that this trading was not regulated. The book contributes to a growing literature on contraband trade, administration, networks, and corruption while challenging narratives of exclusively Spanish influence on the Americas.

Henry Wearie is a man with a brilliant future behind him.He arrived in Hollywood barely twenty-one, having escaped from a confusing family and New York University. He got hot fast, selling a big-money script. He was on his way up -- though not quite as far up as he had expected. Henry stalled in the middle, then fell from there. As he puts it, "I've been hotter and colder than my oven."It's All True maps Henry's odyssey through a tantalizing Los Angeles that he loves and resents, a place where he always feels one phone call, one script, or one break away from the brass ring that circles in and out of his grasp. He marries and divorces and never quite stops yearning for his ex-wife. He spends his days trying to resurrect the life that he let slip away. Then his faltering career gets an unexpected jolt from an old girlfriend who has been promoted into the upper reaches of a studio. She helps Henry, though she extracts a surprising price. When the money had been flowing, Henry bought a Jaguar that has gone from gleaming to dented, a constant reminder of his own fallen state. His life has careened from the glamorous to the quotidian, from erotic adventures on location to slow mornings spent with out-of-work buddies at Hollywood's venerable Farmers Market. His friends are a motley crew of wiseguy screenwriters, once-popular directors, obscure actors, and famous and highhanded producers and film stars identifiable to most everyone. In creating Henry's saga, veteran novelist and screenwriter David Freeman has written an intimate history of Hollywood over the last twenty-five years, viewed from inside the soundstages, the bedrooms, the fashionable restaurants, and the studio meetings where fortunes can turn on a chance word. This is a book studded with the delicious details of the folkways of the movie business and the romantic customs of its denizens. Enlivened by Freeman's corrosive wit, It's All True is hilarious and touching and, astonishingly, absolutely all true.

'A journey through Latin America and its football clubs.' A booze-soaked account of 18 months living, working and travelling through Central and South America. Based around 67 football matches, it is a story of a British lad's encounters with the barra brava, Latin America's fanatical supporters. It also documents the modern Gringo Trail, from Mexico through Colombia to Argentina, covering 18 countries along the way. This humorous backpacker's tale touches on the history, politics and social issues encountered in the places visited. From managing a hotel on a nudist beach on Christmas Day, to attempting to get Nicaragua's socialists to admit they murdered their greatest sportsman, this is not your average holiday diary. Diamonds Lost in the Sand is a 'must-read' for all those interested and involved in any way with the raising and educating of children--leaders, teachers, parents and all home-educators.In this book David Freeman shares valuable and proven principles of wisdom which are like diamonds, often buried in the secular sands of culture. David holds them up to the light and offers faith-based wisdom for education: character development, behaviour management and a wealth of insight into children and their needs. A book to use and treasure."I have known David for many years, I have watched him live out these lessons in his work and along with many others I have been a beneficiary of his wisdom. My suggestion is this; enjoy this book as you would a good meal. Savour the contents, consider the flavour, chew it thoroughly and digest it slowly. When that is done, the goodness contained within it will begin to be evident in your own life and work, then both you and your pupils will reap the benefits."Graham Coyle, National Leader (England) of Christian Schools' Trust

In this brief and succinct guide, David Freeman offers insights for the busy Christian teacher to assess just how effectively they are promoting the King and the Kingdom of God in their teaching and their classroom environment. This is a 'must' for all Christian educators, whether in schools or home education. It covers some important aspects but David has written a full account of his and his staff team's experience in leading a Christian school set up by Oxfordshire Community Churches near Oxford, England in his book, 'Diamonds Lost in the Sand'. This offers more depth into such topics as discipline and curriculum and explores much more fully the gems of wisdom we need to cover in education. 'Diamonds Lost in the Sand' is available on Amazon and on Kindle.

Wisdom is not just a key - it is meant to be the top priority and true aim of Christian education. Education is preparing children for life in a wonderful but often complex world. The experience and acquisition of knowledge, although rich and vital, is not enough. In this day and age, more than ever, our children need to be taught and to practise wisdom in daily living and for their future adult lives: this is God's heart for them. The following educators have used and applied HighLight's KEYS (which are all based on biblical principles) with their schools and teachers in the preparation of pupils for successful lives.'These keys are incredible - I have waited all my life, even when a schoolboy, for material of this quality - I cannot recommend them highly enough.' - Steve Beegoo, Principal, The King's School, Oxfordshire 'Highlight Keys express timeless wisdom and shine a light on what our priorities as educators should be.' - Rebecca Tidey, Leader: Grace Learning Centre, Inverness, Scotland'The training I have undertaken with HighLight has been vital in developing my focus and understanding of how to bring Godly truths into the classroom in a relevant way that flows with the curriculum content. The 'Keys' resources that HighLight produces are invaluable, and have convinced me of the fact that there is no lesson content or context that cannot be enhanced and enriched by biblical wisdom. I cannot recommend HighLight enough to other teachers; this is the training and the resources you need to make God and His truths relevant in the classroom.' - Ellie Bailey, Teacher, Romford, UK'HIGHLIGHT unlocks wisdom in learners when you use it but you must keep teaching your staff. When you take time to read the notes of HighLight, you get deep understanding of what you are doing and why.' - Mr F. Buyinza, Principal: Fruits of Hope School, Kigali, Rwanda.
Fighting the Sultan's War

From 1965 to 1976, the Dhofar War was being fought in southern Oman - a conflict wherein the Omani government, led by Sultan Said bin Taimur, and later his son Sultan Qaboos, fought against the Dhofar Liberation Front (DLF), a Marxist insurgency group who wanted to overthrow the Sultan's rule and establish a communist government. The conflict escalated in the 1970s, with Sultan Qaboos receiving military support from Britain and Iran. By 1975, the government forces, with the help of British and Iranian troops, defeated the insurgents, securing the region and stabilizing Sultan Qaboos's rule. Major David Freeman was a one of those British troops - a British Infantry Officer who was seconded to the Sultan of Oman’s Forces in the 1970s. Major Freeman has recorded his experience of this conflict - the operations, the tactics, the successes and the struggles - in extraordinary detail, covering the last year of the war in 1975 and the first six months of 1976 in the still active eastern sector of Dhofar. Fighting the Sultan's War is an eye-opening first-hand account of one of the lesser-known ‘small wars’ of the Cold War era, and should not be missed by any military history enthusiast. David Freeman's memoir was transcribed by his son, Alex Freeman. Born in 1967 into a military family, Alex was educated in the West Country and commissioned into the British Army in 1986. He served as an infantry officer with the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment and The Royal Welch Fusiliers, seeing active service in Northern Ireland, Germany, the Middle East, Africa, and Bosnia. After two decades in uniform, he left the Army in 2006 to pursue an MBA and a career in business.
