Looking for a reliable way to learn how to program on your own, without being overwhelmed by confusing concepts? "Head First Programming" introduces the core concepts of writing computer programs - variables, decisions, loops, functions, and objects - which apply regardless of the programming language. This book offers concrete examples and exercises in the dynamic and versatile Python language to demonstrate and reinforce these concepts. You can learn the basic tools to start writing the programs that interest you, and get a better understanding of what software can (and cannot) do. When you're finished, you'll have the necessary foundation to learn any programming language or tackle any software project you choose. With a focus on programming concepts, this book teaches you how to: understand the core features of all programming languages, including variables, statements, decisions, loops, expressions, and operators; reuse code with functions; use library code to save time and effort; select the best data structure to manage complex data; write programs that talk to the Web; share your data with other programs; and, write programs that test themselves and help you avoid embarrassing coding errors. We think your time is too valuable to waste struggling with new concepts. Using the latest research in cognitive science and learning theory to craft a multi-sensory learning experience, "Head First Programming" uses a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works, not a text-heavy approach that puts you to sleep.

This is my account of what befell Ebenezer Scrooge, professor at Miskatonic University, on Christmas Eve 1927. Some would call it madness, others a flight of fancy. The University would seek to have this journal confiscated, to have all rumour regarding Ebenezer Scrooge's disappearance silenced. Regardless, let this story act as a warning to those who would dabble in the matters of the Elder Things. The Great Cthulhu is listening. Should you ever be visited, as Old Scrooge was, on Christmas night, only you can prevent His rising. Take heed... An affectionate parody of Charles Dicken's Christmas classic, by author and playwright David Griffiths. Featuring a bonus Dickens' Christmas parody, 'The Haunted Man and The Reanimator's Bargain', and a glossary for those unfamiliar with the Cthulhu Mythos.

Vikings began raiding islands and monasteries on the Atlantic fringes of Europe in the 790s. The Irish Sea rapidly became one of their most productive hunting grounds. Attacks, battles and destruction were accompanied by trade – in slaves, silver and fine objects.Vikings crossed and re-crossed the Irish Sea in search of land, wealth and power. Raids were followed by settlement, first in fortified camps, and later in towns, market enclaves and rural estates. Vikings came into contact with existing populations in Ireland, Britain and the Isle of Man. Viking paganism, demonstrated by spectacular burials, was gradually eclipsed by Christianity. By 1050, the process of assimilation was well under way, yet Viking influence and distinctiveness did not altogether disappear. This updated edition of Vikings of the Irish Sea takes the sea as its starting point and looks afresh at the story of a supremely opportunistic people who left their mark in ways that still resonate today.

The Guards 1915-17: An Elite Division at War' is the first history of this illustrious division during these years to have been written since 1924. Making extensive use of the original unit war diaries and key memoirs, it provides a readable narrative and analysis of its battlefield experiences at Loos, Flers-Courcelette, Morval and Pilckem Ridge. These two years are rich in interest. The Guards Division had more than its fair share of 'larger than life' characters to consider such as the division's first GOC, Earl Cavan, the enigmatic 'Crawley' de Crespigny, or the remarkable 'Tally-Ho VC', John Campbell, who rallied his men so dramatically in the heat of battle with his hunting horn. There were acts of the most incredible bravery, inevitable failures in the 'fog of war' and the singular embarrassment of the fraternisation debacle of December 1915.The Guards Division had a unique culture and camaraderie built around the social exclusivity of its officer class and the heritage of its component regiments and much was expected of it. Yet the very nature of the First World War meant that the division's performance levels often depended on matters beyond its control, and it too had to adapt to the learning process being followed across the British Army during these years. Maintaining the Guards Division's reputation as an elite force was always going to be a challenge in such circumstances. This book will appeal to military history enthusiasts, to those with a particular interest in the First World War or with a connection to the Guards as a whole.

In his late twenties, James finds his financial security and career as a photographer have conspired to shelter him from becoming close to his fellow human beings. He feels he should share more, but isn’t sure how. Others would provide the catalyst. His salvation begins when he examines his late father’s effects and these arouse memories of a childhood in Kenya where sharing was common place. Coincidentally, he is given an assignment in Kenya with a fellow professional, Pete, who is willing to share his own very different life. In Kenya a voice from the past provides a dramatic opportunity to engage. Back in the UK, a superficial affair with a woman colleague blossoms into a more intense relationship. Pete and James are given an assignment covering the millennium and James takes the opportunity to engage with his near neighbours. Alongside this project comes a dangerous engagement with Kenyan politics and an uncomfortable relationship with another office colleague. Through these links James finds himself more engaged with the world. Will his newfound contacts encourage James to become a more rounded human being?

How far can we trust our memories and if we can’t what are we left with? Peter Carter is returning to his childhood home to comfort his ailing father and support his mother. His parents have been the bedrock of his upbringing; now his father has a terminal illness. Before returning to his childhood home, he had a store of memories which he assumed to be immutable. When back home, Peter is reminded about his early life through contact with figures and scenes from the past. Many of these reminiscences bring comfort but others are not so benign. Most are far from reliable. Childhood friends have changed and not all for the better. One school friend casts doubt on the sanctity of his family life; another gives quiet support. Some of his memories, once secure records of his youth are mistaken, but which? Some of Peter’s memories become deeply suspect after a major revelation. Does this change what he was, what he is and what he might become?

In the second, revised edition of a well-established textbook, the author strikes a balance between quantitative rigor and intuitive understanding, using a lively, informal style. The first chapter provides a detailed historical introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters offer a quantitative presentation of the Standard Model. A simplified introduction to the Feynman rules, based on a "toy" model, helps readers learn the calculational techniques without the complications of spin. It is followed by accessible treatments of quantum electrodynamics, the strong and weak interactions, and gauge theories. New chapters address neutrino oscillations and prospects for physics beyond the Standard Model. The book contains a number of worked examples and many end-of-chapter problems. A complete solution manual is available for instructors.

First Published in 1998. This is the second volume of Mask: A Release if Acting Resources, and David Griffiths provides a detailed and sensitive view of the Japanese Noh theatre: historically, philosophically (with an evaluation of Zeami's treatises) and in respect of the rigorous practicalities of Noh training. The latter is given particular authority and insight because of the access Griffiths had to Noh actors in training and performance. Greatly enhanced with the author's illustrations, this volume gives one of the most accessible introductions to Noh that is available in English. Appended to the descriptive and analytic material is a short play, The Dove, written by Griffiths (and subsequently professionally performed) described as 'unashamedly' acknowledging its Noh influence. This one-woman price is a sensitive and evocative drama with subtle references to its cultural source. Is potential as an exercise in mask work is excellent.

Focusing on Commedia Dell'Arte, this work provides a historical and critical commentary of the Commedia. It highlights common factors between this genre and that of the Japanese Noh theatre. The author proposes six similarities: characters familiar to their audience and masked, minimal properties and scenery with the focus on the actor, the "families" of performers, a sharp mind as well as an agile body, a professional living on these skills and patronage, and a knowledgeable audience. Complementing this book is the play "Please Be Gentle" which explores the various tricks and devices of Commedia Dell'Arte acting.

First published in 1997. In the 'Masquerades of Nigeria' and 'Touch', the fourth volume of his mask: A Release of Acting Resources, David Griffiths investigates the use of mask in the Masquerade traditions of West Africa, and specially of Nigeria. The author persuasively argues in favour of a common language of masek performance, and focuses particularly on the manner in which the Nigerian dramatist Wole Soyinka explores the theatrical virtuosity and vibrancy of mask in his plays, specially his 'root' play 'A Dance in the Forests'. David Griffiths then presents his short Trilogy of plays, under the title 'Touch' which he created to explore the intricate subtleties of African mask in a manner accessible to Western actors. 'Touch' is based on Soyinka's play and arguably needs that as a point fo reference- but being directed to rad Soykina is to everyone's benefit.
