Sierra Leone: A Political History

Sierra Leone: A Political History

Sierra Leone came to world attention in the 1990s when a catastrophic civil war linked to the diamond trade was reported globally. This fleeting and particular interest, however, obscured two crucial processes in this small West African state. On the one hand, while the civil war was momentous, brutal and affected all Sierra Leoneans, it was also just one element in the long and faltering attempt to build a nation and state given the country's immensely problematic pre-colonial and British colonial legacies. On the other, the aftermath of the war precipitated a huge international effort to construct a 'liberal peace', with mixed results, and thus made Sierra Leone a laboratory for post-Cold War interventions. Sierra Leone examines 225 years of its history and fifty years of independence, placing state- society relations at the centre of an original and revealing investigation of those who have tried to rule or change Sierra Leone and its inhabitants and the responses engendered. It interweaves the historical narrative with sketches of politicians, anecdotes, the landscape and environment and key turning-points, alongside theoretical and other comparisons with the rest of Africa. It is a new contribution to the debate for those who already know Sierra Leone and a solid point of entry for those who wish to know.

Shooting the Moon: The True Story of an American Manhunt Unlike Any Other, Ever
One of the most outrageous true crime stories ever recorded, this acclaimed nonfiction thriller takes readers behind the scenes to reveal what really happened in 1989 when 20,000 American soldiers invaded Panama, arrested that nation's leader, and hauled him back to Miami to stand trial for violations of American law -- violations committed in that ruler's own country. Tracing the secret investigation, the exciting four-year manhunt, and the bizarre incidents that shook U.S. foreign policy to its roots, Shooting the Moon is at once a page-turning story and a first-rate work of investigative journalism.
The Genius: How Bill Walsh Reinvented Football and Created an NFL Dynasty
The Genius is the gripping account of Bill Walsh's career and how, through tactical and organizational skill, he transformed the San Francisco Forty Niners from a fallen franchise into a football dynasty. Along with his right-hand man John McVay, Walsh built the foundation for this success by drafting or trading for a durable core of stars, including Joe Montana, Fred Dean, and Hacksaw Reynolds. (Walsh would later restock the team with such players as Jerry Rice, Steve Young, and Charles Haley.) The key to Walsh's genius perhaps lay in his keen understanding of his athletes' psyches-he knew what brought out the best in each of them. With unmatched access to players, fellow coaches, executives, beat reporters, and Walsh himself, David Harris recounts the whole story-including Walsh's pre-Niners odyssey, the demons that pushed him throughout his career, and the scope of his impact on the game beyond the field and locker room. In the end, Harris reveals the brilliant man behind the coaching legend.

'I don't need a conscience. I've outsourced it to the law. If I obey the law my conscience is clear'. Is it really that simple? Conscience is a survival tool for humankind, hammered out over millennia on the anvil of life experience. It is where our ideas of morality, right and wrong, fairness and honour live. If we outsource these to the law we need to be sure that it will be in safe hands. In this book the author discusses such difficult concepts as ' (not in accord with conscience), actions which are 'unconscionable but not illegal', and actions which are profitable but not honourable. This book investigates the link between democracy and conscience, arguing that democracy needs support from the conscience. We show that at the base of every threat to democracy is an unconscionable act.
