Human Rights in the Age of Platforms
Scholars from across law and internet and media studies examine the human rights implications of today's platform society.Today such companies as Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter play an increasingly important role in how users form and express opinions, encounter information, debate, disagree, mobilize, and maintain their privacy. What are the human rights implications of an online domain managed by privately owned platforms? According to the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, adopted by the UN Human Right Council in 2011, businesses have a responsibility to respect human rights and to carry out human rights due diligence. But this goal is dependent on the willingness of states to encode such norms into business regulations and of companies to comply. In this volume, contributors from across law and internet and media studies examine the state of human rights in today's platform society. The contributors consider the "datafication" of society, including the economic model of data extraction and the conceptualization of privacy. They examine online advertising, content moderation, corporate storytelling around human rights, and other platform practices. Finally, they discuss the relationship between human rights law and private actors, addressing such issues as private companies' human rights responsibilities and content regulation.ContributorsAnja Bechmann, Fernando Bermejo, Agnes Callamard, Mikkel Flyverbom, Rikke Frank Jorgensen, Molly K. Jury Nullification is a must read that everyone will find interesting and informative. Jury Nullified explores and reveals the hidden truth behind the coveted jury trial system. While jurors conscientiously struggle to achieve a fair and just verdict, the judge may have already determined the verdict. No Constitutional Right can be more important to protecting citizens against tyranny than the right to trial by jury. Citizens will determine criminal guilt or innocence rather than the King or some governmental body. With more than two decades of trial experience, the author takes an insider look at how judges are successful in circumventing the 6th Amendment.

Interest in old trolleybuses increased as they began to disappear from the urban landscape in the early 1960s, and this interest has been boosted in recent years by the prospect of a new generation of trolleybuses designed in - and for - the twenty-first century. This interest, at once nostalgic and forward-looking, has led to loving restorations of surviving examples, meaning that it is possible in cities including London, Glasgow and Dublin to see and ride in functioning buses. This book traces the fascinating history of the trolleybus since the first experiments in this mode of electric transport were conducted over a century ago.

“David Kaye’s book is crucial to understanding the tactics, rhetoric and stakes in one of the most consequential free speech debates in human history.” —Cory Doctorow The internet was designed to be a kind of free-speech paradise, but a lot of the material on it turned out to incite violence, spread untruth, and promote hate. Over the years, three American behemoths—Facebook, YouTube and Twitter—became the way most of the world experiences the internet, and therefore the conveyors of much of its disturbing material. What should be done about this enormous problem? Should the giant social media platforms police the content themselves, as is the norm in the U.S., or should governments and international organizations regulate the internet, as many are demanding in Europe? How do we keep from helping authoritarian regimes to censor all criticisms of themselves? David Kaye has been has been at the center of the discussions of these issues for years. He takes us behind the scenes, from Facebook’s “mini-legislative” meetings, to the European Commission’s closed-door negotiations, and introduces us to journalists, activists, and content moderators whose stories bring clarity and urgency to the topic of censorship. Speech Police is the most comprehensive and insightful treatment of the subject thus far, and reminds us of the importance of maintaining the internet’s original commitment to free speech, free of any company’s or government’s absolute control, while finding ways to modulate its worst aspects.

Some losses once born can never be undone. The hardest thing in life is losing someone you love. Although death is the one certainty in life, death and in its aftermath, the grieving process is rarely discussed until after the event. Grief includes physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological reactions to loss. Acute grief results from a sudden unexpected loss. This short book intends to look at acute grief resulting from an unexpected and sudden death of a loved one, often forcing the survivor to question the very nature of life and existence itself.

According to SET theory, in order to function effectively inside their own skin and maintain their integrity, in the face of exponential cross purpose communication and increasingly conflictual stress resulting from an inability to reconcile the discrepancies between their own needs and their demands on others on the one hand, and others' demands on them and their needs, on the other, a person needs to identify which of their seven life domains including health, family, relationship, profession, education, finances and self, are not functioning, noting how the satisfactory domains are different. They then need to adopt cognitive and lifestyle restructuring micro-strategies and learn to invest an equal amount of their attention into all seven life domains at once rather than senselessly and aimlessly pouring energy, resources and time through futile efforts into and becoming pre-occupied with the life domains that are intractable and unsatisfactory.
