This fully updated edition of the classic reference in its field keeps professionals current with the latest technology and techniques in transmission of digital signals. Unlike other references on the subject, this volume is written specifically for engineers and focuses on practical systems and their application in actual design and implementation. It covers systems used throughout the world in chapters detailing the latest on basic system design, baseband transmissions, and digital radio and cable systems. Every chapter from the previous edition has been updated, and new information has been added on: Fiber-optic transmission and digital transmission networks; New digital transmission networks - including private-line, public, and personal communication networks - and integrated services digital networks; Trellis-coded modulation, spread spectrum, digital cross-connect systems, and source codes. Areas covered include analog-to-digital conversion, time-division multiplexing, digital modulation, network synchronization, and how to test, monitor, and control transmission systems. Extensive design examples and references drawn from common carriers, manufacturers, and the author's own experience clarify real-life applications in actual systems. The latest standards published by the CCITT, CCIR, and ANSI are provided, and many new sample problems in each chapter build understanding and expertise. Since digital transmission is used by virtually all communications systems today, this new edition is an essential refeence for all engineers, operators, supervisors, and managers who work in systems testing, operations, maintenance, planning, and research and development. It will also meet the needs of students taking digital communications courses.

Provides and analyzes real examples of how structured decision making (SDM) can help solve complex problems involving natural resources. When faced with complicated, potentially controversial decisions that affect our environment, many resource management agencies have come to realize the value of structured decision making (SDM)—the systematic use of principles and tools of decision analysis. Few professionals, however, have extensive experience implementing SDM. Structured Decision Making provides key information to both current adopters of the method and those who are deploying it for the first time by demonstrating the formal use of decision analysis to support difficult, real-world natural resource management decisions. Drawing on case studies from multiple public agencies in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Mauritius, the editors present an overview of decision analysis, a classification of decision types, and a catalog of decision analysis methods. Dozens of detailed charts and maps help contextualize the material. These case studies examine a rich variety of topics, including• keeping forest birds free from disease• conserving imperiled freshwater mussels• managing water for oil sands mining• dealing with coastal wetlands in the face of sea-level rise• designing networks for prairie-dependent taxa• combatting invasive alpine shrubs• managing vernal pool habitats for obligate amphibian species • and much moreAimed at decision makers tackling natural resource challenges in government agencies around the world, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students preparing to work in natural resource management, Structured Decision Making shows how SDM can be implemented to achieve optimal outcomes that integrate social values and scientific understanding.Contributors: Taber D. In the development of telecommunication networks throughout the world, digital transmission has now replaced analog transmission as the predominant choice for new transmission facilities. This trend began in the early 1960s when the American Telephone and Telegraph Company first introduced pulse code modulation as a means of increasing capacity in their cable plant. Since that time, digital transmission applications have grown dramatically, notably in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe. With the rapidity of digital transmission developments and imple mentation, however, there has been a surprising lack of textbooks written on the subject. This book grew out of my work, research, and teaching in digital transmission systems. My objective is to provide an overview of the subject. To accomplish this end, theory has been blended with practice in order to illustrate how one applies theoretical principles to actual design and imple mentation. The book has abundant design examples and references to actual systems. These examples have been drawn from common carriers, manufac turers, and my own experience. Considerable effort has been made to include up-to-date standards, such as those published by the CCITT and CCIR, and to interpret their recommendations in the context of present-day digital transmission systems.
