The Theory of Critical Distances

The Theory of Critical Distances

Critical distance methods are extremely useful for predicting fracture and fatigue in engineering components. They also represent an important development in the theory of fracture mechanics. Despite being in use for over fifty years in some fields, there has never been a book about these methods – until now. So why now? Because the increasing use of computer-aided stress analysis (by FEA and other techniques) has made these methods extremely easy to use in practical situations. This is turn has prompted researchers to re-examine the underlying theory with renewed interest. The Theory of Critical Distances begins with a general introduction to the phenomena of mechanical failure in materials: a basic understanding of solid mechanics and materials engineering is assumed, though appropriate introductory references are provided where necessary. After a simple explanation of how to use critical distance methods, and a more detailed exposition of the methods including their history and classification, the book continues by showing examples of how critical distance approaches can be applied to predict fracture and fatigue in different classes of materials. Subsequent chapters include some more complex theoretical areas, such as multiaxial loading and contact problems, and a range of practical examples using case studies of real engineering components taken from the author’s own consultancy work. The Theory of Critical Distances will be of interest to a range of readers, from academic researchers concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject, to industrial engineers who wish to incorporate the method into modern computer-aided design and analysis.

This detailed study of the criminal justice system in Victorian Britain highlights the dilemmas facing those responsible for administering justice and protecting society from "the criminal." Encompassing the crimes of the never-identified Jack the Ripper, as well as many other equally intriguing criminals, Hooligans, Harlots, and Hangmen: Crime and Punishment in Victorian Britain is a detailed study of the criminal justice system as it evolved from the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 to the outbreak of the "Great War" in 1914. The first section of the book considers crimes and criminals, while the second looks at the ways in which the Victorians sought to explain this deviant behavior. The third section focuses on the creation of criminals through the work of the constabulary and the courts. The final section considers the changing ways in which criminals were punished as the scaffold gave way to the prison as the dominant means of punishment. A brief introduction and conclusion set Victorian crime into its broader sociopolitical context and relates the issues society grappled with then to those of the present day.
Crime, Policing and Punishment in England, 1750–1914
One of the fastest-growing and most exciting areas of historical research in recent years has been the study of crime and the criminal. The intrinsic fascination of the subject is enhanced by the fact that between the mid eighteenth century and early twentieth century, the English criminal justice system was fundamentally transformed as a new disciplinary state emerged. Drawing on recent research, this book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of these important changes.

Roger McLaren - ex computer salesman, erstwhile impersonator, now a part-time SIS agent, and successful novelist - is en route to visit ex school-pal, Tony Higgins, in Perth, Western Australia; a holiday during which he hopes to recover from the effects of a previous "mission" during which his girlfriend was killed. Having opted for a "recommended" Singapore stopover en route, he soon discovers his life is again being manipulated. During his brief sojourn on the island nation, Roger - by result of an apparent mistaken identity - suddenly finds himself to be in possession of a large quantity of heroin, by means of which he is coerced into assisting the Australian Federal Police (Narcotics Branch), in an attempt to close down an International drugs ring. His choices somewhat limited, he naturally opts for the latter as, in Roger's opinion, "Let's face it, life can become boring if you allow it to". The British SIS, with whom Roger has tenuous links, are also seen to be involved.Naturally, being Roger McLaren, the inevitable female companion pops up. In this instance, the stunning Miss Judy Kimberley Hamilton, whom he meets by chance on the flight from Singapore to Perth. This turns out to be a rather fortuitous meeting, for Kimberley's father, Robert K Hamilton, chairman of Hamilton Industries Pty, would seem to be implicated in the very things in which Roger has an interest. At least, certain branches of his conglomerate would appear to be deeply involved, especially those linked to the ruthless Klaus Santana, and his "Claws", one of which is the seemingly psychopathic, Bruce Jones.Roger delivers the "package" upon arrival in Perth then, piecing together seemingly unrelated bits of data, an idea begins to form. Throw in the delightfully sexy Kimberley, a smattering of travel, technology, and intrigue, and Roger once more finds himself with his hands rather full.
