A Primer to Theoretical Soil Mechanics is about adapting continuum mechanics to granular materials. The field of continuum mechanics offers many fruitful concepts and methods, however there is declining interest in the field due to its complex and fragmented nature. This book's purpose is therefore to facilitate the understanding of the theoretical principles of soil mechanics, as well as introducing the new theory of barodesy. This title argues for barodesy as a simple alternative to the plasticity theory used currently and provides a systematic insight into this new constitutive model for granular materials. Dieses Werk bietet eine systematische und dabei verständliche Einführung in den modernen Tunnelbau. Berücksichtigung finden Entwurfselemente und Ausrüstung sowohl von Straßen- als auch von Eisenbahntunneln. Ferner enthält es die Grundzüge der Felsmechanik und geht dezidiert auf die statistischen und anderen mechanischen Probleme des Tunnelbaus ein. Älteren, mehr intuitiven Konzepten wird hiermit ein rein rationaler Zugang gegenübergestellt. Eine Vielzahl von neuen approximativen Formeln erlaubt eine schnelle Vordimensionierung und eine Abschätzung der relevanten Parameter. Die Benutzung dieser Formeln wird an Beispielen aus durchgeführten Tunnelbauprojekten erläutert.

Die Wechselwirkungen des Bodens mit dem Wasser machen die Bodenmechanik theoretisch noch anspruchsvoller und für die Praxis noch wichtiger. Zu einer Zeit, wo Regelwerke und Normen unüberschaubar werden, kommt es mehr denn je auf das Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden Konzepte an. Der Autor legt größten Wert auf ihre übersichtliche Darstellung, sowohl in der Theorie als auch in der Praxis, die sich in der Geotechnik rasant verändert. Veraltete Theorien und Bauverfahren wurden ausgelassen, und dafür wurde ein Einblick in die vielfältigen Randgebiete der Geotechnik gewährt.
