Plants and plant derived agents have long history as source of potential chemotherapeutic agents in Ayurvedic and Unani system of medicine. Vitex negundo, belonging to family Verbenaceae (which comprises 75 genera and nearly 2500 species), commonly known as five leaved chaste tree (Eng), Nirgundi (Hindi), is a deciduous shrub, occur in tropical to temperate regions (up to 2200 m from east to west) grows gregariously in wastelands and is also widely used as a hedge plant.
