Thin Place is a collection of thought-provoking vignettes; fresh mini-journeys down paths inspired by the Celtic notion that this world and the next are separated by a veil. In most places in time and space this veil is thick, obstructing our view and keeping us down here from seeing into up there. It keeps us "in the dark." But in some places and moments in our lives, in some special experiences, relationships, and endeavors...the veil is thin, like gauze. It allows us to catch a glimpse of the mysterious glory beyond.Duncan Campbell invites you to consider your experiences, relationships, and moments with a fresh perspective, writing with warmth and wit while keeping an eye on the bigger horizon. Discover this engaging read that author, minister, and speaker Josh Ross (Scarred Faith and co-author of Bringing Heaven to Earth) says "weaves creativity, experience, and wisdom in order to spark the imagination...you will devour this book."

A brilliant novel about contemporary London gangland crime by the hugely well reviewed author of THE PARADISE TRAIL. Britain's best known gangster, Charlie Hook, wants to tell his life story and chooses crime reporter Laurie Lane as his reluctant ghost. But the next day Hook is dead, his blood and hair on the walls of his north London mansion. Who has killed the last of the London Godfathers? Could it be a Russian businessman with a love of Scottish poetry and something dodgy in his Hampstead garden?

A witty, wildly funny, poignant and, at times, tragic novel about the passing of an age where nothing seems to matter until the hard, cruel world comes knocking at the door. It's 1971, and the travellers who end up in the flea-pit Lux Hotel in Calcutta are determined to have a good time. Theres ex-public schoolboy Gordon, the cool American Larry,a weird pair of Australians, and Freddie Braintree, the acid casualty. Their scene is innocence and inner journeys. But there's a war going on between India and Pakistan and a mysterious hippie killer is lurking in the dark alleyways of the city. Meanwhile, Hugh, the straight one who is trying to build a career, is covering the war for a British newspaper but he hasn't a clue what he is doing. The shocking massacres and brutality he witnesses cast a long shadow over all their lives.

English Public Opinion and the American Civil War

A study of the development of English opinion on the American Civil War, paying special attention to the issues of slavery, neutral rights, democracy, republicanism, trade and propaganda - a new interpretation. At the end of the American Civil War, both North and South condemned Britain for allegedly sympathising with the other side. Yet after the conflict, a traditional interpretation of the subject arose which divided English sentimentbetween progressivism siding with the Union and conservatism supporting the Confederacy. Despite historians subsequently questioning whether English opinion can be so easily divided, challenging certain aspects and arguments of this version of events, the traditional interpretation has persevered and remains the dominant view of the subject. This work posits that English public and political opinion was not, in fact, split between two such opposing camps- rather, that most in England were suspicious of both sides in the conflict, and even those who did take sides did not consist largely of any one particular social or political group. Covering the period from 1861 to 1865,Campbell traces the development of English opinion on the American Civil War, looking particularly at reaction to issues of slavery, neutral rights, democracy, republicanism, American expansionism, trade and propaganda. In so doing he offers a new interpretation of English attitudes towards the American Civil War. This island was one of Cabot's early discoveries in North America, and was called by him St. John, a name it carried through much of its history. However, it was claimed by France as part of the discoveries made by Verazani in 1523, and it remained under French control for much of its early history. In 1713, when Acadia and Newfoundland were ceded to England, the French inhabitants were given liberty to leave, and many went to St. John. Again, when the Acadians were driven from Nova Scotia in 1755, many removed to St. John. In 1763, St. John was ceded to the British, who then developed some grand plans for the settlement of the island by their own people. Subsequently it was settled by Loyalists fleeing from the American colonies, and by many Scotch highlanders. The latter are readily apparent from the names of the heads of households in the 1798 census of the island which is included as an appendix to this history. The author also wrote a history of Nova Scotia. A new full-name index has been added.
