Phillip Willing Howard III may walk through life alone, but through this walk, he may develop a strength which we all seek. Life challenges us to be a part of a group, and through this, we tell ourselves that we gain our strength. The author believes we gain our strength by understanding just who we are first. When we learn to accept ourselves and stand alone when necessary, we grow and become that person that Christ put us on this earth to be. We meet life's challenges with a vigor that protects us as we learn to be a true friend.

My wish is that you somehow understand that we all have a little boy inside that has to come out. It took me several years to get used to the idea that I would be greeted by others with the words, "Good morning, sir." What should have been accepted as an acknowledgment of respect seemed odd to me because I wanted to maintain that ability to be a little boy all of my life. A lot of us fall short and fight against the respect of growing up. Hi, my name is Mr. Eddie W. Engram Jr., and I am not a little boy anymore. Some people get stuck in the habit of doing things as a young boy or girl would. Everyone wants long nappy hair (dreads) to make-believe they are hip and part of a young society. We buy clothing with holes in them, color our hair with purple and pink colors, or wear our pants down below our hips to show our undergarments. We're trying to forget that life goes on, and we have to play our role, whatever that may be. The challenge should be to break away from that immature nature and become a responsible member of this society. Then we can make a difference. That little boy will grow up to be a man.

Who hasn't watched a football game and envisioned yourself achieving that lofty goal as a young person? I loved to play sports, and I felt like I was good at it. I loved making that touchdown or shooting the lights out on the basketball court. I was a fairly good baseball player, and I could run like the wind. Those achievements were good, but life is more than being just good. I had to really work at accepting the possibility that one plus one would equal two or to understand the meaning of congregating verbs. We challenge ourselves to grow by opening up a book and trying to understand the many messages left for us by so many minds. When we exercise the muscles, along with the mind, we learn to be the change makers and then step away from the pack. This book is about stepping away from that pack and making a difference in your life. It all starts with a book, and it ends with work, and now you can challenge yourself.
