There has been an increasing use of architectural timber battens in Queensland, and indeed Australia wide, over recent years and while they can certainly look excellent when first installed, they have the potential to be a maintenance nightmare. Following the failure of a high profile batten project where one fell to the ground, it needs to be recognised that there is the potential in a people occupied space for litigation. When researching the subject I came to the conclusion that while these concerns were valid, they did not have to be the accepted consequence of using timber. If some basic steps are taken it will result in a long lived feature that ages well even in tropical and subtropical architecture. The following chapters will take you through the issues involved in designing to achieve that end. I could find no books on the subject so, without the generous help of those I have acknowledged, this design aid for professionals would not have been possible. Most of the projects illustrated are from Queensland in Australia which the travel advertisements say is renowned for being "beautiful one day and perfect the next" (just another way of saying it is a harsh climate). Systems that work in the Queensland environment will perform better in cooler climates.

My frustrations experienced trying to sell trouble free, low maintenance bridges has prompted me to write this book so standards will be raised. This book is intended to assist the following: Footbridge purchasers: Footbridges can and do fail and the best time asset owners have to address that risk is at the time of purchase. This book will, in part, give guidance to the asset owner on preparing the specification and so avoid shortcomings that have been seen in some kit bridges. Professional designers: My intention is not to teach you how to engineer the structure. This book will allow you to take the skills you already have and allow you to recognise where extra care has to be taken. By detailing your bridges well they will age gracefully and exceed your client's expectations. While there is little actual engineering in this book, just detailing, you can find span charts in my other publications: -Boardwalk Design Guide-Deckwood Selection Guide and-Commercial Barrier GuideTo some extent this book is my personal journey with footbridges and I recount the mistakes I have made and mistakes made by others. From these you will see how logical timber design is and how easy it can be to design out the durability issues that can be associated with timber. This book will have been a success if purchasers become more discerning in their approach to footbridges in general and designers approach timber footbridges with confidence.

In 2017 I was called in as an expert witness to give may opinion on some very expensive external timber furniture that had failed, and then the replacements also failed in a very short time frame. It was patently obvious that neither the designer or fabricator knew the difference between external furniture and internal furniture. This book will not teach you to be a creative designer of external furniture, that is not its purpose. The book will show you how to detail your creation so that it stays together and ages gracefully. The book is filled with illustrations that graphically demonstrate the points I am making.

The subtitle of this book is ""A Somewhat Different Commentary,"" so how is it different? Theology without application can be lifeless and boring, and while the comments have been well-researched, contemporary application has been primarily my focus. I hope that with this commentary on the book of Ruth I have written something that can be read for pleasure as well as spiritual growth. I started writing this commentary during the drought of 2019 that ravaged Australia, prompting me to keep my small farming valley in mind. Whenever possible I have tried to tie the lessons of Ruth back to the issues I see in my own community, one which has foreign farm workers, successful landholders, virtuous men and women, older godly women who no longer work but have influence, the issue of who gets the farm, and what constitutes citizenship.

Welcome to the long-abandoned glories of the Greek city of Ephesus in what is now Turkey. While Jerusalem has been called the cradle of Christianity, Ephesus was surely its nursery. For one momentous generation, Ephesus was the literary focus of early Christianity, and by its compilations influenced Christianity more than Jerusalem, Antioch, or Rome. This ancient city played a pivotal part in the formation of the New Testament with at least six of its books having a connection there. Paul ministered in Ephesus longer than in any other city and legend has it that John lived the last of his very long life in Ephesus. These same legends also say that Timothy became the city's first bishop and was martyred, and where the runaway slave Onesimus would eventually succeed him. However, these books were written to a world and culture that was vastly different from our own. Without understanding life situations of the intended recipients that Paul and John were writing into, we can easily read into them a meaning not necessarily intended by the author. This book will give you that understanding without the intrusion of specialist terms.

Women in Ministry

Women in Ministry

Worldwide, most Christians are members of denominations that exclude women from ministry. However, coinciding with the rise of feminism, there has been a strong pushback against this traditional view. Conversely, in some quarters there has been a strengthening of resolve to maintain the status quo, believing that male leadership is God-ordained and valid for all times and places. Is the push for women in Christian leadership a case of the church now conforming to the spirit of the age, or has the church with its male leadership, for the last 1900 years, been guilty of that? Is the present move for inclusion a case of ""yet more light and truth breaking forth from God's word""? This book is a defense of women's role in ministry. It looks initially at the condition women lived under when the New Testament was written and their expectation for ministry. Later chapters examine the discord in ancient Ephesus that led to restrictions in ministry for women and then look in detail at 1 Tim 2:8-15, the passage that is commonly quoted to restrict women's roles. My conclusion is that that it does not provide clear evidence of a permanent prohibition of women in leadership roles.

Acts for the Everyday Christian is just that. This commentary is not written for professionals who relish obscure technical issues. Instead, it is written for Christians who have not had years of theological training and just want to know what the passage is saying. With this aim, Edgar Stubbersfield simply focuses on the core elements and presents them in an easily readable style, with a strong emphasis on the historical context of the events Luke describes.
