A definitive cultural history that tracks cowboy boots from cattle trails to contemporary rodeo, revealing an American icon whose craftsmanship continues to shape national identity. From cowboy boots' humble origins to their elevation as cultural icons, this far-ranging volume chronicles how their distinctive designs and makers have shaped and been shaped by American culture. Engaging narratives, insightful interviews, and vibrant images showcase the evolution through five transformative eras: "Real" explores multicultural origins and the authentic cowboys who wore them; "Rodeo" examines Western mythmaking through Wild West shows, early film, and dude ranches; "Rhinestone" delves into country western music, Nudie Cohn's designs, and the shifting archetypes from Gene Autry's moral code to John Wayne's tougher persona. "Red" investigates the boots' emergence as luxury commodities during the Reagan years and Urban Cowboy phenomenon, while "Reclaimed" presents contemporary reinterpretations across diverse communities--from LGBTQ+ and hip-hop artists to the Western-inspired fashion of Beyonc and Pharrell Williams. Complementing the authoritative foundation are thoughtful interviews that enrich the historical analysis: an indigenous voice essay provides cultural perspective, Nudie Cohn's origin story offers industry context, while conversations with both traditional craftsmen and innovative modern makers demonstrate how the cowboy boot continues to evolve while honoring its heritage.

We all make choices every day about which shoes to wear, but why do we choose the shoes we do? Organised around four main types — boots, sneakers, high heels and sandals — Shoes: The Meaning of Style explores the history of shoes and how different types of footwear have come to mean different things about the people who wear them. Along the way Elizabeth Semmelhack reveals the anecdotes and scandals, successes and failures, dislikes and obsessions of the makers, wearers and observers who helped to create the movements and fashions of footwear. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Shoes is a thoroughly surprising history of an everyday item that will appeal not only to followers of fashion, but to those interested in social history and identity.'Elizabeth Semmelhack's work sheds a new and fascinating light on footwear, looking at its social significance and how it has changed over the years. Born in 1907, Roger Vivier was known and loved for the daring and lavish shoes he designed over the course of a seven-decade career. He created iconic models such as the pilgrim shoes worn by Catherine Deneuve in 1967 for Luis Bunuel s Belle de Jour, the virgule heel, and the rectangular chrome buckle. The designer closed his business before he passed away in 1998, but the brand s acquisition by Diego della Valle, the owner of Tod s, kickstarted a revival in 2003 that has taken Roger Vivier from being a Parisian heritage shoemaker to a luxury shoe and accessory label with international reach. With Gherardo Felloni named creative director of the maison in March 2018, Roger Vivier continues its tradition of visionary design and exceptional style. Felloni studied the vast archives, taking in the codes of the fashion house while at the same time creating something totally new and contemporary, not just through the shoes and accessories he designs, but also through theatrical event concepts. This book will be the new reference book for the Roger Vivier brand, telling the firm s story from to the beginning to the present day, making it a must-have for all fashion lovers, students, and experts. It contains materials from the archives up to the recent collections.
