When the whole of Europe went to war in 1914, Pittsburgh watched the storm clouds gather at home. Yet Pittsburgh was a city of immigrants--the large Polish community urged leaders to join the side of the Allies, while German immigrants supported the Central powers. By the time the country entered World War I in 1917, Pittsburghers threw their support into the war effort united as Americans. With over 250 mills and factories, the Steel City and Allegheny County produced half of the steel and much of the munitions used by the Allies. Pittsburgh gave more than steel--sixty thousand men went to war, and women flocked to the front lines as nurses. One of the first gas masks on the western front was developed at the Mellon Institute, while the city's large Red Cross provided tireless support on the homefront. Historian Elizabeth Williams traces the remarkable story of Pittsburgh during the Great War.

That's BIG: Believing It's God is an inspiring book which shares different experiences from Elizabeth's life where God moved in a big way on her behalf, drawing her close to Him and helping her become the woman He created her to be. This book is filled with numerous testimonies: some comical, some serious, some tearful and some flat out unbelievable. All life changing. All working together for good. These powerful testimonies show God's protection and faithfulness to Elizabeth over the years. One example is how the Lord literally brought her back from death when she was in a major car accident at the age of sixteen. Each of these testimonies speaks to the unconditional love and mercy of God and serves as a reminder that we can turn to Him no matter what we're going through. This faith-filled book will leave you confident, encouraged, hopeful, renewed, strengthened and living BIG. Elizabeth Williams has devoted her life to service: serving God and other people. Her mission is to encourage others and bring God glory through sharing her testimony with as many people as possible. Elizabeth was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. She received her B.A. in Communication and Information Sciences from the University of Alabama in 2003. She is a marketing and communications professional with sixteen years of experience in community engagement for a local hospital system. Elizabeth is an author, board chair, certified life coach, community leader, entrepreneur, mentor and motivational speaker. She is the owner of MindingYourLiz.
The Politics of Race in Britain and South Africa
The postwar government of South Africa, led by H.F. Verwoerd, implemented wide-ranging racial segregation laws, beginning the open policy of apartheid in one of Africa's most prosperous and internationally influential states. During the apartheid era, the British government faced an uneasy dilemma: while repudiating apartheid laws it maintained an ambiguous stance towards the South African government. As black South African's were reduced to the status of non-citizens after the 1970 Citizenship Act, increasing numbers of exiles and fugitives were finding refuge in Britain, which was now home to a growing anti-apartheid protest movement. This is the first book to examine the British support for the anti-apartheid movement among its own black communities. Elizabeth Williams highlights the connection between domestic anti-racism struggles and the struggle in South Africa, showing how black Britons who were themselves fighting racism in British society identified and expressed solidarity with black South Africans during the Apartheid years. Williams further assesses the way in which Black communities in Britain viewed Margaret Thatcher's support of South Africa despite the international call for sanctions. Featuring the work of acclaimed documentary photographer and civil rights activist Vanley Burke, this will be an essential book for students and scholars of race, British history, international relations, post-colonial studies and South African history.

Through These Eyes, is a collection of experiences and challenges in the form of stories during my nursing career that left an indelible mark upon my mind. Some of these experiences help to mold the way I saw my job and cared for my patients. Sometimes in executing one's job as a nurse was like weathering a storm. The medical situation could be very critical, the storm brutal, survival depended on your execution of the client's plan of care to save him/her and to save yourself. On days like that you really had to even breathe thoughtfully. Every day was a challenge to me. I prayed for guidance from a God who doesn't exist for so many but for me the, "I am" was my lifeline. He was here before knowledge; therefore there was never a situation I didn't trust him to help me assess and execute. I fought for every life that was put in my care as though my very existence depended on it. And you know what it did As a part of the Medical Profession Registered Nurses have adopted an oath to serve without harm.
