Emanuel Hirsch's (1888-1972) thoughts about prayer are maybe the best that can be said about it (Paul Tillich). Being a farewell lecture for his students at the Bonn University, published for the first time in 1921, it develops the meaning of prayer in a lucid manner and is still worth considering today. Central insights of the Reformation become linked with questions and problems of modern times to ensure prayer its place also in an increasingly confusing modernity. The text is supplemented by reflections of Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) from 1922 on mystical religiosity. Thus, two central impulses of modern spirituality in all their dynamic diversity are made available, annotated by the Marburg systematic theologian Claus-Dieter Osthovener. The booklet is suited not only for future pastors and teachers of religion as an introduction to a central moment of Christian practice of piety but for all who pray and reflect on their praying.
