When she learns that her oldest friend, Vidal Noyes, is missing, Gale Blackburn wastes no time reviving her commando past to search for him. A recent conversation with Vidal leads her to conclude that he's been kidnapped by conspirators, actually Vidal's co-workers at NASA, in an attempt to steal the plans for his most recent invention. Using a garbage bag of money which Vidal keeps in a secret closet, Gale hires a "reformed" drug smuggler to search the islands and ocean around Florida. She then employs an Everglades Indian and a militia group to help her search for Vidal on land. Once Vidal is located, Gale tackles the problem of identifying all the conspirators and keeping Vidal, who has faked a loss of memory about the kidnapping, from being killed to cover up the crime. Simultaneously, Gale tries to prevent her lover, lawyer Derek Greene, from learning that being a law-abiding citizen is the least of her concerns as she struggles to save Vidal. Evalyn Anderson lives in Vero Beach, Florida. Her previous books include another "Gale Blackburn novel," Vampires Don't Backpack, and Cairo, 1967- A Dangerous Place for an American. Whether Gale is having a honeymoon is questionable. She is spending more time with another man, T. Price Smith, her friend and financial adviser, than with Derek, her groom. But she is definitely sleeping with secrets from Derek. She has never told him about the private London bank she partly owns, leaving it to T. Price to oversee. At her wedding reception, T. Price gives her the bad news that the bank might be in trouble. She has to escape from the daily trips to trials at the Old Baily and dinners at the Inns of Court with his solicitor friend, which had made Derek suggest London for the honeymoon. She convinces Derek that she would enjoy sightseeing and shopping more, which frees her days to work with T. Price to save the bank from crooks. She has a few days of honeymoon left after they succeed, including a cruise home.Derek begins to wonder who he's married after two sudden shocks -- one when she dives into the ocean and brings up the body of a man who's fallen overboard from the deck above where they are enjoying the ocean, and the other when he wakes to a gunshot when he's sleeping in their cabin. Gale had not deliberately kept it a secret from Derek that she had been trained in deep water rescue; this didn't seem like anything important in landlocked Orlando.. But the gunshot was another matter. She worked with the ship's captain to cover up this un-Disney World-like occurrence. Gale reported that the intruder's gun had gone off when she had hidden behind the door after hearing noises outside, and tripped him as he entered. The captain's story was that this was a burglar who had taken a chance that Gale might have kept the fabulous necklace she wore for dinner at the Captain's table in her cabin. It was some honeymoon
Jane Marlowe, whom her friend, John, a sheriff in a nearby county, had designated "pro bono attorney extraordinaire" for finding a solution for an extraordinary problem for her last client, Clyde Piggott, was struggling to get her mind around the words of a potential client. The man was Hollywood handsome and dressed in a custom made suit, with a huge diamond ring flashing on his left hand. He told her that Clyde, who'd been on the same space ship he'd returned to Earth on, had recommended her..She'd helped John when he'd found Clyde, dressed in Nineteenth Century clothes, trespassing on a local farm, which he claimed to own. Neither Jane nor John had bought his story of alien kidnapping in 1897, medical experiments on him in space, and return with a bag of what he called "rocks," which turned out to be huge diamonds worth a fortune. Clyde said the aliens had returned him to his farm, but, obviously, not in the few seconds of human time they had promised. But who was he? And why the bizarre story? When he never deviated from his story, John and Jane both struggled to answer this question. After John had contacted prisons and mental hospitals for escapees, looked into theft reports, and checked every database he knew of, they still had no answer. Finally, Jane realized that she had a client who didn't exist, concluded that he needed a 21st Century life and created one for him. Was she looking across her desk now at a human being or at an alien creature, merged into a human body he claimed to have created in a laboratory in ancient Egypt centuries ago?She needed a break
When her oldest friend, Vidal Noyes, a brilliant scientist and inventor at NASA, goes missing, Gale Blackburn suspects that he's been kidnapped by a conspiracy headed by his supervisor, Stan Fredericks, whose unusual interest as to when Vidal would finish up his report on an invention for military use, but with civilian possibilities worth millions had made Vidal uneasy. Now would be the ideal time for a thief to steal the report, just before it's submitted to the prototype builders. Afraid to report him missing to NASA authorities because these may be the very people who have kidnapped him, she doesn't hesitate to revive her commando skills, part of her mysterious past, to search for him.Gale mounts an intense land and sea search, hiring a "reformed" dope dealer to search the waters between the Cape and the Bahamas, a swamp-dwelling Indian leader to organize a search of the Everglades, and a local Orlando militia group to help her search the Florida mainland.Once Vidal is found alive by herself and the militia men, Gale has to tackle the problem of identifying all the conspirators, and keeping Vidal, who is faking a memory loss of the whole incident, from being killed to cover up their crime. Throughout it all, Gale has to keep her lover, Derek Greene, a lawyer, from finding out that being a law-abiding citizen is the least of her concerns as she struggles to save her friend, Vidal.
