Most of the scholarly literature on the cinema of Michelangelo Antonioni focuses on the director's distinctive film style. Many studies mention his relationship to various modern art movements and the thematic ambiguity of his work, but few position Antonioni's later films in their modernist context and within the contemporary phenomenon of ambiguity. This study attempts to situate Antonioni within the larger, contextualizing discourse of modernism and its "problematics of language".

Het grootste deel van de wetenschappelijke literatuur over de cinema van Michelangelo Antonioni richt zich op de kenmerkende filmstijl van de regisseur. Veel studies noemen zijn relatie tot verschillende moderne kunststromingen en de thematische dubbelzinnigheid van zijn werk, maar weinig plaatsen Antonioni's latere films in hun modernistische context en binnen het hedendaagse fenomeen van de dubbelzinnigheid. Deze studie probeert Antonioni te situeren binnen het grotere, contextualiserende discours van het modernisme en zijn "taalproblematiek".
