Things Could Get Ugly

Things Could Get Ugly

Things Could Get Ugly is historical fiction, set in late summer, 1939. It was a time when the Great Depression lingered on, Jim Crow divided the South along racial lines, the Syndicate was extending its influence. Hitler threatened war in Europe, and there was speculation President Franklin Roosevelt might run for an unprecedented third term. Jack O'Brien, a young newspaper reporter, returns to Covington, looking for a story that will make his reputation and, he hopes, help him land an assignment overseas to cover the events unfolding in Europe. The story Jack finds involves a scoundrel preacher, a wrongly convicted black man, a corrupt politician, and a dangerous mobster. But if he pursues that story, he puts everything he holds dear at risk. Although the story involves a gangster and public corruption, the novel has the "vibe" of the newspaper reporter movies that were popular in the 1930s. Many of its themes are relevant today. And like those 1930s "reporter" movies, there's a romance angle too

A graphic novel depicting the Zulu War of 1879 which led to a catastrophic defeat for the British followed by an incredible and heroic stand of epic proportions is told in gripping narrative fashion in this illustrated novel. As the mighty British empire forced the region of South Africa into war, the famed Zulu nation, first formed under the brilliant yet cruel Shaka-Zulu, inflicted the first blow---a devastating massacre which shook the entire world to its core. The next day, a small garrison at Rorke's Drift felt the onslaught of the Zulu army but in one of the most revered "last stands", the occupiers managed to hold off the Zulus and were awarded more Victorian Crosses than any battle had been before. This is the story of the two battles...one that proved Britain was no longer invincible and the other which led to the demise of the Zulu Empire. "...a well-written recounting of the Zulu War of 1879. .. gets behind the story to analyze its root causes, the battles of the war, and its long-lasting effects..." - Atomic Avenue. "Wayne Reid always delivers great art appropriate to any setting." - Rafael Nieves, Author of Tales From the Heart and Edgar Allan Poe's The Bells. "This is how history should be told. Educational, enlightening, and enjoyable." - Robert W. Scott, Checking the Shelves.

Think a Batman-style story set in the Americas 1760s. A Tale of Rebellion From the dark mist of Raven Cove, the mysterious figure of the Scarecrow owns the night, terrorizing the British soldiers who reign with a tight fist on a small seaport village in the colonies. Set in the dramatic days before the American Revolution, a masked avenger seeks to maintain justice in the small town of Seaton. As the British seek to clamp down on the local smugglers, only the Scarecrow and his "freedom riders" can stand against the tyranny of the new commandant of the town...one who threatens to destroy the entire town in order to catch the Scarecrow. A Murder of Scarecrows is a graphic novel of high adventure. "With Murder of Scarecrows we get a pre-Revolutionary War tale of adventure along the lines of Robin Hood or Zorro." - Tim Hansen. "Reed has always been very unconventional. He doesn't go after the quick and easy story but rather he tells stories his way. They might not be best-sellers, but they are of a quality that outdoes most other writers."- Mania.com

Guns, Polls, and Democracy

Guns, Polls, and Democracy

Guns, Polls, and Democracy has a simple thesis: Supermajorities of Americans should usually be able to get the laws they want. But when the problem is gun violence, that isn't the case. Our gun violence problem is staggering: Firearm fatalities claim almost 40,000 lives in the United States each year. Active shooters garner the most attention, but firearm suicides take the largest toll. Domestic violence brings the problem home. There are also "road rage" and "retail rage' shootings. And cop killings. And on and on. Americans recoil from the violence. Although deeply divided on the rhetoric of guns and gun violence, polls consistently show that most Americans actually agree on a broad range of specific policy proposals. This well-researched book carefully explains each of those proposals-including universal background checks, "red flag" laws, closing the "boyfriend" loophole, and a dozen more. But Guns, Polls and Democracy is more than an introduction to the gun policy debate. It collects polling data to assess which proposals Americans support and which they don't. It also breaks out which proposals Republicans, Trump voters, and gun owners support and which they oppose. Powerful members of Congress and our state legislatures, funded by gun manufacturers, armed with gun lobby talking points, and buoyed by Second Amendment absolutists, stand in the way of enacting the very modest measures most Americans want. Can such a stark division between what most Americans want and what Congress is willing (or able) to deliver be healthy for representative democracy in this country?

It started with a single Red Diary. Inside it contained all the secrets that the owner had listened to and talked about with her lovers. She wrote down everything in there. Her lovers were powerful men and when she threatened to go public with it, she died. Murdered? Perhaps. But the diary went missing. The woman was Marilyn Monroe and her lovers included President John F. Kennedy and his brother, then Attorney General, Robert Kennedy. Her death remains a mystery...as does the contents of the Red Diary as it has never turned up anywhere. Now a man claims to be the son of Marilyn Monroe. His father? Perhaps one of the Kennedys but he doesn't know which one. He has been approached by a mob hitman who was assigned to watch over Marilyn as she carried her pregnancy out in Mexico. The mobster, calling himself Carlos, fell in love with Marilyn as so many other men have. When he witnesses the murder of Marilyn, he steals the diary. And then he begins his own set of red diaries....to carry on Marilyn's work. From the assassination of Kennedy, to the cover up that followed and the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy to Watergate, Carlos chronicles all the aspects he knows. His role differs in the various conspiracies and he claims he was the one that shot the fatal bullet into Kennedy's brain...partly for money and partly for retribution for Marilyn's death. Now, so many years later, an investigative team attempts to uncover both the diaries and the truth. Can the story possibly be true? Are there really a set of diaries that will blast everything wide open? As they go deeper, they find stumbling blocks in Washington and from the mob. Collects the complete comic issue series 1-4.
