Many students of American history know of the heroics of Paul Revere, Ethan Allen, Nathaniel Green, and, of course, George Washington, but few know of these two men. Joshua Barney, 23 years old, and his friend and compatriot, David Rose, only 20, played vital roles in key battle, on land and sea, for their nation's independence from Britain. Rose's great grandson times six recounts how both of these brave men put their lives on the line and gave us the freedom we treasure today.
Robert and Raymond were best friends. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, Robert went to fight the Japanese in the Pacific. Raymond and his family were interned at Manzanar. Then Raymond joined the 442nd regiment and fought the Germans in Italy, earning two Silver Stars.
Once upon a time there was a little boy named Hamilton, and a little girl named Egberta. They lived two houses from one another on Sheridan Road in Wilmette, Illinois, a small suburb north of Chicago, and they were students in the same grade at the local public school, Wilmette Junior High School, or WJHS, in west Wilmette. From the time the two of them were very little, Hamilton and Egberta were the best of friends. Everyone at WJHS said that Hamilton was smart, and strong, and quick on his feet, and quite handsome. Similarly, everyone at WJHS said that Egberta was smart, and strong, and quick on her feet, and quite pretty. And from the time Hamilton and Egberta were in preschool together, everyone - including their parents - referred to them simply as "Ham" and "Eggs." Of course. Hamilton and Egberta loved to engage in sports, and walk along Lake Michigan at Gillson Park, and play word games with their friends. But most of all they loved to travel. In fact, whenever they traveled they would write stories about their adventures together.
Gerard Rose follows Hamilton and Egberta, junior high school students living on the North Shore above Chicago, on their twenty sightseeing trips around the world. As with the first book featuring Ham and Eggs, each site presents an adventure. And mixed with the entertaining bedtime story is a wealth of interesting historical, geographical, and cultural information that will feed both the children, and the adults who are reading to them.So off you go, from sea to shining sea across America, and around the world... glorious excursions to delight the young at heart of all ages.
