Quale dovesse apparire Fiorenza dentro dalla cerchia antica a chi ne portava la cara e desiderata imagine scolpita nel cuore, e ne' lunghi e faticati pellegrinaggi o nelle dolorose vie dell'esilio ripensasse l'aspetto della patria contesa e lontana, per noi ora difficile raffigurare. Risalire il corso de' secoli quasi andare a ritroso su per una grande fiumana: vediamo a poco a poco allontanarsi le scene tumultuose della vita presente e ad esse succedere la pacata visione d'un paesaggio semplice e campestre che la civilt non ha peranco turbato; e pi oltre, quando le acque si son fatte limpide e pure, scorgiamo nella loro chiarit cristallina specchiarsi le sponde solitarie, verdeggianti di canneti e di arbusti, e infine ristringersi il corso delle acque, zampillanti tra le roccie e i macigni; e le ripe scoscese coprirsi di macchie folte e conserte. Chi, giunto alle scaturigini remote, riconoscerebbe in quel fil d'acqua argentino la torbida e scrosciante corrente che, traversando citt popolose, dava moto agli ansanti opifici e, sordida di tante umane immondizie, si spandeva limacciosa nel mare?
