In this book, Wagener presents the life and work of the German writer Erich Maria Remarque, whose antiwar and exile novels have sold millions of copies worldwide. The author tells of Remarque's fascinating life as a child in the Westphalian city of Osnabruck, as a soldier in World War 1 as a newspaper editor in Hannover and Berlin, as the famed author of ""All Quiet on the Western Front"", and as a German living in exile in Switzerland and the United States. Wagener then provides an in-depth analysis of Remarque's novels, placing them in the context of 20th century history. A discusssion of their aesthetic merits as well as their reception in the United States and in Germany is also included.

Die Arbeit untersucht, wieweit durch das Englische die Position des Deutschen als Fremd- und Wissenschaftssprache Schaden nimmt. Die Zahlen von 2005 und 2010 der Standigen Arbeitsgruppe Deutsch als Fremdsprache (StADaF) mit dem starken Verlust an Lernern des Deutschen scheinen dies nahe zu legen. Ein Drittel der befragten Lehrenden des Deutschen als Fremdsprache oder der Germanistik sieht diese Gefahr ebenfalls. Ein Zuruckdrangen der Rolle des Englischen ist bei der globalen Entwicklung in allen Bereichen sicher nicht moeglich. Es kann also nur eine Balance zwischen der Verwendung des Englischen und Deutschen und insgesamt ein Festhalten an Mehrsprachigkeit angestrebt werden. Vorschlage, wie dies erreicht werden kann, bietet das Schlusskapitel und greift dabei auch die Empfehlungen der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz vom November 2011 zur Sprachenpolitik an den Hochschulen auf.

English summary: Gabriele Tergit's (1994-1982) novel 'Kasebier erobert den Kurfurstendamm' (1931) which deals with the Berlin life of the Weimar Republic was an immediate success. Forced to go into exile after the national socialist take-over of power, Tergit went first to Prague, then with her husband to Palestine and finally to England . There she was secretary of the German Exil PEN Club from 1957-1981. Her Jewish family saga 'Effinges', in many ways a Jewish counterpart to Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, about the German Jewry in the 19th and 20th centuries, could not be published until 1951. The importance of Gabriele Tergit lies just as much in her exemplary life as a Jewish exile author, her continued literary work in exile and in her work as the secretary of the German PEN center in London. Thus the book does not only deal with the life and work of a German writer, but with a Jewish author from Berlin whose career was derailed by National Socialism, who, in spite of the vicissitudes of exile, ontinued to work.
