This is occurring through tuition tax credits, voucher initiatives, and for-profit, educational management organizations. The volume grows out of a conference that took place at Columbia University's Teachers College which launched the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education.

Hur kan vi förstå skolan utifrån olika sätt att se på lärande och prestationer? Varför är ekonomer intresserade av skolan?Utbildningsekonomi – om lärandets värde tar utgångspunkt i det utbildningsekonomiska fältet och beskriver hur ekonomiska teorier har utvecklats för att användas inom utbildningsområdet där de möts av pedagogiska teorier.I ekonomiska teorier är inte elevernas lärande i fokus utan istället ligger fokus på vilka faktorer som gör skolan effektiv. Dessa olika sätt att se på skolan behöver inte stå i motsättning till varandra men dessa två ämnesdiscipliner gör helt olika teoretiska antaganden om skolan och lärande som kan leda till konsekvenser som vi ser i dagens skola.
