Flora Indica presents a representative selection from the previously fractured, uncatalogued, and largely inaccessible collection of over 7,000 Indian illustrations in Kew’s archives, through which readers are invited to discover the important lost histories of Indian botanical art from the age of empire. This 3-volume work forms the second in a series of monographs by Henry Noltie documenting the more important collections of Indian botanical drawings in the Library of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Book 1, The Life and Work of Robert Wight, provides the definitive biography of Wight. Book 2, Botanical Drawings by Rungia & Govindoo: the Wight Collection. Book 3, Journeys in Search of Robert Wight, describes the author's travels as he carried out the research that underpins his work.

This handsomely bound publication reproduces for the first time, in colour, a selection of 137 drawings from a remarkable collection of 3860 watercolours that depict almost every member of the British flora.

Hugh Francis Clarke Cleghorn (1820–1895) was one of the many remarkable Scottish surgeons who worked for the East India Company, but who used an official posting as a base for research upon India’s rich flora, and recording it visually in drawings made by Indian artists. His particular interest was in useful plants, which led to the major work in the field of forest conservancy for which he is best remembered.

The Cleghorn Collection reproduces more than 200 of the drawings from the Cleghorn Collection in colour, for the first time. These include drawings from nature, copies based on European prints, and Nature Prints made from herbarium specimens. They are the work of several South Indian artists and of pupils of the pioneering Madras School of Art.

This book is based on an exhibition of the paintings of Lillian Snelling in 2007. This was the first exhibition of these drawings, by an artist considered to have been 'the greatest botanical artist of her time.'
