Materials Science for Electrical and Electronic Engineers
This is a book for electrical and electronic engineers, not for materials scientists. Every explanation is rendered in its simplest and clearest form and as many relevant examples are included as possible. At every point, the author makes clear the direct relevance of every topic to the reader's main course of study: electrical and electronic engineering. The central theme is that the type of bonding in a solid not only controls its electrical properties but also, and just as directly, its mechanical properties and how things are made from it. Thus the reason why a copper wire can conduct electricity is exactly the same reason it can be drawn into a wire in the first place. The reason why a piece of porcelain does not conduct electricity is the same as why it cannot be rolled into its final shape as copper could and thus has to be made directly. This common origin of electrical and mechanical properties dictates the structure of the book.
The Role of Business Ethics in Economic Performance
The Role of Business Ethics in Economic Performance is a major edited collection of papers on why and how the conduct of business behaviour effects its commercial success. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to the issues looking at the lessons from economic theory, the institutional setting and the supply and demand side conditions which are forcing firms to take ethics seriously. Lord Eatwell considers the ethical foundations of the market economy. Mark Casson analyses the economic importance of leaders, while Simon Deakin and Frank Wilkinson empirically examine the role of contractual obligation in the UK. Adrian Cadbury and Norman Barry examine voluntary institutions and government's importance in setting ethics. Maurie Cohen and Russell Sparkes look at the ethical consumers and ethical investors increasing influence on business conduct. Finally Clive Wright and Neil Hood examine the internal organisation of national and transnational firms which increasingly build an ethical dimension into their corporate decision making.

Every nation has a lovable bandit/rebel/folk hero in the mould of Robin Hood and Rob Roy. But Ned Kelly is an uncomfortable hero - he killed policemen, robbed banks, stole horses from squatters...But he became a champion of the rural underclass and an enemy of arrogant officialdom. Ned Kelly was of Irish stock - to some, he embodied the splendid rebel spirit of the Irish, to others he was the awful example of what the Irish Australian was capable of in opposition to British law. Ned Kelly became increasingly prominent in Australia's artistic life - in paintings, literature, poetry, drama, music and film - and the Kelly legend lives on.

The safety bicycle, with front-wheel steering and pedal-driven rear wheel, has existed in some form since the experiments of Kirkpatrick Macmillan in 1839, but his ideas were almost forgotten when the front-wheel driven boneshakers and penny farthings reigned supreme. Then, in the 1870s, experimental safeties appeared, culminating in Henry Lawson’s Bicyclette of 1879. Within ten years the modern bicycle had developed, to remain basically unchanged for over seventy years. Many specialist and experimental designs have appeared since the late nineteenth-century, most of which, if they passed the prototype stage, failed to attract the public and now languish in museums.
The Local Church and Generational Change in Birmingham, 1945-2000
An examination of how religious identity changed in twentieth-century England, using Birmingham as a case-study to illuminate wider trends. The ongoing debate about secularisation and religious change in twentieth-century Britain has paid little attention to the experience of those who swam against the cultural tide and continued to attend church. This study, based on extensive original archive and oral history research, redresses this imbalance with an exploration of church-based Christianity in post-war Birmingham, examining how churchgoers interpreted and responded to the changes that theysaw in family, congregation, neighbourhood and wider society. One important theme is the significance of age and generational identity to patterns of religiosity amidst profound change in attitudes to youth, age and parenting andgrowing evidence of a widening "generation gap" in Christian belief and practice. In addition to offering a new and distinctive perspective on the changing religious identity of late twentieth-century English society, the book also provides a rare case-study in the significance of age and generation in the social and cultural history of modern Britain. Ian Jones is the Director of the Saltley Trust (an educational charity), Birmingham.

Consumption and Generational Change
The study of consumption in social life is growing. Moving from being a relatively unimportant part of the processes of production, distribution, and exchange, questions of how people consume and to what ends now occupy center stage. Today's capitalism is exemplified by a global arena of consumption in which distance is no obstacle to distribution and ownership. Equally, social distinctions that accompanied classically "modern" forms of consumption are now more complex and fluid than classifications of "high" and "popular" culture allow. This book addresses the rise of consumer culture and the various attempts to explain and account for it. It considers the view that a particular generational framework was formed in the post-war period and has been carried on into the early twentieth century with particular consequences for the experience of later life. The rise of individualism, of mass consumption, leisure and lifestyles have been accompanied by the democratization of social forms and for many a corrosion of community and social cohesion. The text highlights how understanding is gained from examining the generational habits that developed in tandem with the rise of mass consumption.Drawing on historical perspectives and comparative studies, the book addresses social change with reference to generation effects and conflict. Having set the scene in terms of the literature on consumption, lifestyles and generational change, the volume poses key questions in relation to the transformation of later life that are addressed in turn by the contributors. This is a key volume as we enter the second decade of a new century.

There is a very large body of literature on Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC), much of it is confusing and contradictory. This book consolidates all the relevant aspects to provide clinicians and especially trainees with an overview of this condition which informs clinical practice and aids critical appraisal of new research in this area. The topic of NEC is often a single chapter in a paediatric surgical or neonatology text. This book is an invaluable guide for anyone caring for neonates.
