Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture plays an important role in shaping the places in which we live and work. But what is it? Landscape architects are involved, amongst other things, in the layout of business parks, the reclamation of derelict industrial sites, the restoration of historic city parks, and the siting and design of major pieces of infrastructure such as motorways, dams, power stations, and flood defences, as well as the planning of parks and gardens. Taking a historical perspective, Ian Thompson looks at both the roots of landscape architecture and the people that established it. This Very Short Introduction explores some of the misconceptions about landscape architecture and considers the discipline's origins in landscape gardening. Thompson takes a look at a number of areas, including the influence of Modernism, the difference between landscape design and landscape planning, and the way that planning legislation has driven the growth of the discipline. He also explores contemporary environmentalism, the debate as to whether landscape architecture is an art or a science, landscape architecture in the community, post-industrial projects, and its relationship with ecological urbanism. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Maple is a powerful symbolic computation system that is widely used in universities around the world. This short introduction gives readers an insight into the rules that control how the system works, and how to understand, fix, and avoid common problems. Topics covered include algebra, calculus, linear algebra, graphics, programming, and procedures. Each chapter contains numerous illustrative examples, using mathematics that does not extend beyond first-year undergraduate material. Maple worksheets containing these examples are available for download from the author's personal website. The book is suitable for new users, but where advanced topics are central to understanding Maple they are tackled head-on. Many concepts which are absent from introductory books and manuals are described in detail. With this book, students, teachers and researchers will gain a solid understanding of Maple and how to use it to solve complex mathematical problems in a simple and efficient way.

They suffer the harrowing loss of friends to the monstrosity's ravenous attacks. Hope ebbs away... How far will friendship take the survivors? What extremes will their darker sides take them to?Can anyone escape this subterranean hell and the relentless wrath of the God Of War? Review by Sefina Hawke for Readers' Favorite: God Of War by Ian Thompson is a suspense filled novel that will appeal most to an audience made up of a mix of mature young adults and adults who enjoy the idea of being scared out of their minds. God Of War portrays a horror that started back during the Roman occupation when one Gaius Pertinax wanted to find something more, something really special for the gladiators. What he brought about was a horror that still exists in modern times and is found by a group of cavers who are hunted by it.God Of War will make even the bravest reader quake in their shoes; it is a book best read during the day as reading it at night is likely to give nightmares. God Of War is extremely well written with each scene described in fluent language that transitions beautifully from one scene to the next. Ian Thompson offers multiple perspectives from different time periods and characters to really allow the reader to understand the horror, the events, as well as the characters themselves. Each character was well written; my favorite part was the beginning of the book that focuses on John, Mary, and Melissa. I really felt for all of them and was sadden by the tragedy of their lives. I finished God Of War feeling shaken and a bit worried about nightmares, but that is the mark of a good horror novel. 4/5(Link to Review: readersfavorite.com/book-review/god-of-war) "Gory, scary and totally unpredictable story. Ian Thompson is definitely one to watch."5/5 Review on Amazon UK by a Kindle Customer From other 5-Star Reviews for Ian Thompson: "...extremely well written and very dark... Highly recommended.""I was completely sucked in and captivated from the first page""Wonderful characters and an even better story""I was impressed by the quality of the storytelling... an enthralling mix... a solid read""...a thriller... you can't stop reading""...characters were interesting and real... full of twists and turns""...an absolutely awesome, intense read."

And amid all the chaos, desperation and destruction, there awaits a malevolent revelation for Hector... Something so awful it may destroy Hector's sanity before it takes his life. Reviews from this author's fantasy releases: ...for the Hector Reborn saga: "...I couldn't put it down. Amongst all the fantasy and action, the strongest part of the story is Hector's character. He is governed by honour and loyalty - which not only leads him into conflict, but leads him to cause a disaster. We see many sides of him, from his personal strength, to his heartbreak and loss, to a desperation to fix the terrible things he causes... to him being almost destroyed by another twist in the novel... very cleverly written - I highly recommend this book.""...This novel is definitely unique as it incorporates history and fantasy into one whirlwind of a story. We are immediately transported into the world of Hector, the Prince warrior who is determinedly trying to protect his homeland before his death at the hand of Achilles... Hector as a character is hard not to like, he has a distinct set of values and is loyal to a fault. Although granted this does get him into trouble later in the book and he is not immune to making mistakes it was good to read. Without giving away too many spoilers the other characters were definitely full of surprises and the author has no qualms about character deaths. Personally I do enjoy this in a novel as it creates genuine fear for the characters and their fates. If you do enjoy fantasy mixed with some historical fiction then I would recommend this for you."...for the Era Of Darkness saga: "...The action is intense, the battles are brutal, and the characters are complex and very real. What a great story ""...vividly descriptive with an almost metered artistry...""...Fast and furious paced action fantasy. Great characters that you really care for. Battles are huge and bloodthirsty. Cool races and well-designed monsters. A cracking-good read... ""I was impressed by the quality of the storytelling... an enthralling mix... a solid read" "...intense battles, incredible dark magic... so many twists and turns... I loved it""I was completely sucked in and captivated from the first page""...mixture of fantasy, mystery, loyalty that make it a one of a kind story""Wonderful characters and an even better story"
