She married an Algerian and led a legendary and stormy life that included subversive political anarchism, the mysticism of Islam, numerous love affairs, and most importantly, writing unmatched by her contemporaries. Writings from the Sand, Volume 1, at once the document of a remarkable life and a literary treasure, appears here in English for the first time.
