Collins Arabic Big Cat is a guided reading series for ages 3 to 11. The series is structured with reference to the learning progression of Arabic at nursery and primary schools researched especially for Collins. This carefully graded approach allows children to build up their reading knowledge of Arabic step by step. Level 7 books include story lines with more episodes in time sequence, and may include imaginary happenings in the context of familiar experiences. There is still repetition but more variation in pattern and more new words are introduced than in lower levels. Non-fiction titles bring in simple non-fiction tools, such as diagrams, labels and captions. Additional vowel marks that encourage the flow of pronunciation are introduced at this level. Verbal sentences of up to 8-10 words with repeating and accessible actions appear at this level. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends. This imaginative journey round the world based on material by the poet James Carter recounts a journey to some exotic and far-flung locations. Anne Wilson's beautiful collage-style artwork captures the atmosphere of India, China and Africa. This book is the perfect springboard for discussion of travel, transport, other countries and cultures.

The Buddhist monk Tanxu surmounted extraordinary obstacles-poverty, wars, famine, and foreign occupation--to become one of the most prominent monks in China, founding numerous temples and schools, and attracting crowds of students and disciples wherever he went. In this book, James Carter draws on untapped archival materials to provide a book that is part travelogue, part history, and part biography of this remarkable man. Tanxu lived in a time of almost constant warfare-from the Sino-Japanese War of 1895, to the Boxer Uprising, the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese occupation, and World War II. He and his followers were robbed by river pirates, and waylaid by bandits on the road. Caught in the struggle between nationalist and communist forces, Tanxu finally sought refuge in the British colony of Hong Kong. At the time of his death, at the age of 87, he was revered as "Master Tanxu," one of Hong Kong's leading religious figures. Capturing all this in a magnificent biography, Carter gives first-person immediacy to one of the most turbulent periods in Chinese history.

Ricoeur on Moral Religion

In Ricoeur on Moral Religion, James Carter argues that Paul Ricoeur's later philosophical writings provide a highly instructive interpretive key with which to assess his philosophical project as a whole. This first systematic study of the 'later Ricoeur' offers a critical yet sympathetic reconstruction of Ricoeur's hermeneutics of ethical life, which demonstrates his significant contribution to contemporary philosophy of religion and moral philosophy. What emerges is a clear and distinctive moral religion that binds humans together universally on the basis of the life they share as capable beings. Carter also uncovers a hitherto unforeseen thread in Ricoeur's writings concerning ethical life, pulled through his own readings of Spinoza, Aristotle, and Kant. Ricoeur's hermeneutics is structured by a Kantian architectonic informed at different levels by these three philosophers, who ground a rich, holistic, and ultimately rationalist account of ethical life and religion that resists the trappings of both positivism and postmodernism.

The Buddhist monk Tanxu surmounted extraordinary obstacles--poverty, wars, famine, and foreign occupation--to become one of the most prominent monks in China, founding numerous temples and schools and attracting crowds of students and disciples wherever he went. Heart of Buddha, Heart of China traces Tanxu's journey from his birth in 1875 to his death in 1963. Through Tanxu's life we come to know one of the most turbulent periods in Chinese history as it moved from empire to republic. James Carter draws on archives and interviews to provide a book that is part travelogue, part history, and part biography.
Why Einstein Was an Ignorant Fool
This book examines the experimental measurements that are used to verify Einstein's theories of special and general relativity and his ideas about relativistic cosmology that eventually became the Big Bang. It examines the differences between the calculations of Einstein's metaphysical assumptions and the physical principles of the Living Cosmos. The Living Cosmos makes the same astronomical measurements as relativity but does so from perspectives that are upside down, backwards, and inside out from standard model Big Bang theories. The book presents new principles for atomic physics and gravity based on the physical measurements of mass, space, time, and gravity instead of relativity's metaphysical assumptions of equivalent force and "pure" photon energy. The creation of the Living Cosmos is revealed as a sequential, non-synchronous, evolutionary process in which the galaxies were created first, then the stars, and finally our atomic matter. The true and absolute nature of gravity experiments is revealed.

12 November 1941: war and revolution are in the air. At the Shanghai Race Club, the elite prepare their best horses and most nimble jockeys for the annual Champions Day races. Across the city and amid tight security, others celebrated the birth of Sun Yat-Sen in a new centre which challenged European imperialism. Thousands more Shanghai residents attended the funeral of China’s wealthiest woman. But the biggest crowd gathered at the track; no one knew it, but Champions Day heralded the end of European Shanghai. Through this snapshot of the day’s events, the rich and complex history that led to them and a cast of characters as diverse as the city itself, James Carter provides a kaleidoscopic portrait of a time and a place that still speaks to relations between China and the West today.

Talking Books sets out to show how some of the leading children's authors of the day respond to these and other similar questions. The authors featured are Neil Ardley, Ian Beck, Helen Cresswell, Gillian Cross, Terry Deary, Berlie Doherty, Alan Durant, Brian Moses, Philip Pullman, Celia Rees, Norman Silver, Jacqueline Wilson, and Benjamin Zephaniah. They discuss with great enthusiasm:*their childhood reading habits*how they came to be published*how they write on a daily basis*how a particular book came together*a type of writing that they are especially known for.Through in-depth interviews, they each reveal their approach to their craft. Much is know and spoken of the product that is the children's book, but it is rare that writers are given the opportunity to talk at length about the process of writing for children. Talking Books redresses the balance by presenting a wide selection of authors (of fiction, non-fiction and poetry) reflecting upon the joys and challenges of the craft, creativity and process of writing for children.
