Why Can’t I Feel the Earth Spinning?

Why Can’t I Feel the Earth Spinning?

Why do I have to wash? Why don’t aeroplanes fall down? Where do mountains come from? Why is the sea blue? Why do I dream? This book invites young people to discover more about the world around them by asking and answering questions for themselves. The book is structured around twentytwo questions, each one tackled over two spreads. The first spread explores the question and answer, supported by a detailed illustration, photograph or diagram. The second spread asks further questions on a similar theme to help build an understanding of how science underlies everything from the ingredients in our fridge to reaching the moon. The tone of the text is fresh and informal without being flippant.
No Morality, No Self

Frequently cited and just as often disputed, Elizabeth Anscombe’s “Modern Moral Philosophy” (1958) and “The First Person” (1975) are touchstones of twentieth-century analytic philosophy. Though the arguments Anscombe advances in these papers are familiar to philosophers, their significance remains widely misunderstood, says James Doyle. No Morality, No Self offers a fresh interpretation of Anscombe’s still-controversial theses about ethical reasoning and individual identity, specifically, her argument that the term “moral” (as it occurs in such contexts as “moral obligation”) is literally meaningless, and that “I” does not refer to some special entity called a “self”—a pair of claims that philosophers have responded to with deep skepticism. However unsettling Anscombe’s conclusions may be, Doyle shows the underlying seriousness of the British philosopher’s reasoning, exposing with clarity and concision how the counterarguments of Anscombe’s detractors are based on a flawed or incomplete understanding of her ideas.Doyle zeroes in on the central conundrum Anscombe posed to the referentialist school: namely, that it is impossible to give a noncircular explanation of how “I” refers to the person who utters it. He shows where the refutations of philosophers including Lucy O’Brien, Gareth Evans, and Ian Rumfitt fall short, and throws light on why “I” developed features that make it look as if it functions as a referring expression. Reconciling seemingly incompatible points of view, Doyle argues that “I” does refer to a self, but not in a way anyone suspected—a surprising conclusion that is entirely à propos of Anscombe’s provocative thought.

Most critics and literary historians have ignored Marxist-inspired creative literature in Canada, or dismissed it as an ephemeral phenomenon of the 1930s. Research reveals, however, that from the 1920s onward Canadian creative writers influenced by Marxist ideas have produced a quantitatively substantial and artistically significant body of poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction. This book traces historically and evaluates critically this tradition, with particular emphasis on writers who were associated with, or sympathetic to, the Communist Party of Canada. After two chapters surveying the work of anti-capitalist writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the book concentrates on the development of Marxist-inspired writing from the 1920s to the end of the twentieth century. Besides devoting attention to both social and theoretical backgrounds, this study provides critical commentary on work by prominent writers who spent part of their literary careers as Communist Party members, including Dorothy Livesay, Patrick Anderson, Milton Acorn, and George Ryga, as well as less well known but more fervent Communists such as Margaret Fairley, Dyson Carter, Joe Wallace, Stanley Ryerson, and Jean-Jules Richard. Although primarily concerned with the older generation of Marxists who flourished between the 1920s and the 1970s, the book also includes a chapter on the post-1970s "New Left."

Architecture and the Origins of Preclassic Maya Politics highlights the dramatic changes in the relationship of ancient Maya peoples to the landscape and to each other in the Preclassical period (ca. 2000 BC–250 AD). Offering a comprehensive history of Preclassic Maya society, James Doyle focuses on recent discoveries of early writing, mural painting, stone monuments, and evidence of divine kingship that have reshaped our understanding of cultural developments in the first millennium BC. He also addresses one of the crucial concerns of contemporary archaeology: the emergence of political authorities and their subjects in early complex polities. Doyle shows how architectural trends in the Maya Lowlands in the Preclassic period exhibit the widespread cross-cultural link between monumental architecture of imposing intent, human collaboration, and urbanism.

Post-Confederation Ottawa sets the scene for this fascinating biography of a literary couple. The marriage of Annie Howells and Achille Fréchette in 1877 brought together two literary families and two cultural traditions. Annie was the daughter of the US consul in Quebec, William Cooper Howells, and sister of the American novelist William Dean Howells. Achille, a translator for the Canadian House of Commons, was the brother of the French-Canadian poet Louis Fréchette. Both Annie and Achille were authors themselves, and their lives and careers touched frequently Ottawa's political, cultural, and religious life. In Ottawa the Fréchettes established themselves at the centre of a distinguished bilingual circle of politicians, poets, and scholars. Their friends included Wilfrid Laurier, Alphonse Lusignan, and, in later years, Archibald Lampman. Both Fréchettes continued to pursue the literary careers they had begun before their marriage. Annie published a serialized novel and many short stories and articles; Achille's poems continued to appear in various periodicals. Achille also took part as writer and trustee in a bitter debate over separate schools. The many surviving letters between Annie and her brother William cover various topics of mutual interest to Canadians and Americans, reflecting both Canadian and American cultural experience in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

A superbly illustrated history of the arts of the Americas before the European invasions, this book offers a timely reevaluation of the visual cultures of the ancient Western Hemisphere. From Alaska to Argentina, this rich survey of diverse peoples and landscapes presents a new understanding of some of the world’s great visual traditions. Organized chronologically from the 2nd millennium BC to the colonial period, it examines societies and artists across modern national borders. Allowing readers to discover civilizations in traditionally understudied regions, the book surveys art across all media: landscape, built environment, monumental sculpture and painting, bodily adornment and portable objects for life and death. The book emphasizes recent findings from leading scholars about the communities of artists that thrived under the patronage of powerful families in ancient American city-states and imperial capitals. It draws comparisons and contrasts to global traditions, underscoring the importance of the ancient American corpus. A rich body of illustrations from museum collections and archaeological sites takes readers across the continents and through the centuries. The result is an important consideration of the art, peoples and cultures of the ancient Americas.
