Integrative Mental Health Care

Integrative Mental Health Care

In mental health care as in medical care, more and more clinicians are turning to unconventional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to treat their patients in the most effective way possible. Integrating traditional methods of therapeutic care (i.e., pharmacologic treatments, cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, etc.) with complementary and alternative medical (CAM) approaches—including the use of vitamin and mineral supplements, mindfulness training, yoga, light therapy, music, biofeedback, energy therapies, acupuncture, and other mind-body treatments—has been shown to be more effective than taking the traditional route alone. However, very few resources or guidelines exist for clinicians on how exactly to go about incorporating these nontraditional approaches into treatment. Likewise, very few trustworthy manuals exist for patients on what their options are in terms of CAM methods. This book makes sense of it all by offering practitioners a concise, evidence-based guide to the day-to-day management of common mental health problems using a CAM approach. The first part of the book lays the foundation, explaining the basics of complementary and integrative methods in mental health care. The second part, organised by core symptom, guides practitioners through the process of creating an effective and sound CAM treatment plan.

Practiced in community centers and psychiatric hospitals throughout Brazil, Spiritist therapies are gaining increasing recognition internationally for their ability to complement conventional medicine. This pioneering text is the first comprehensive account of the philosophy, theory, practical applications and wider relevance of Spiritist therapies to be published in the English language. Leading practitioners and researchers in the field describe the history, principles and diagnostic processes of the Spiritist approach to mental health, and provide an extensive summary of the various methodologies used, including spiritual mediumship, energy work, prayer, homeopathy, past life regression and the practice of integrating spirituality into counselling and psychotherapy. Considering the ways in which Spiritism aligns with contemporary science, they show that the Spiritist model has the potential to bring about a positive transformation in the ways in which mental health care is conceptualized and delivered around the globe. The final part of the book explores how Spiritist centers and psychiatric hospitals are established and financed, with specific examples from Brazil and the USA. Providing important new insights into the rich tradition of Brazilian Spiritism, this authoritative text will be of interest to mental health professionals, counselors, therapists and alternative and complementary health practitioners.

Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s-when social unrest and environmental battles reached a fever pitch-The Plant Healer blends mystery, romance, and spiritual revelation. James Lake's richly layered story invites readers into a realm where sunlight, water, and whispered secrets can sow both wonder and danger-and where nurturing the earth might just be the key to saving ourselves. The Plant Healer by James Lake plunges readers into a world where academic intrigue collides with secret gardens, hidden agendas, and the uncanny power of nature. At Fairfield College, young botanist Devin Douglass struggles under the towering shadow of his grandfather's legacy. While he yearns to push the boundaries of plant science-experimenting with psychoactive species and honoring shamanic traditions-he's stonewalled by the department's star scientist, William Watson, whose conventional research wields both prestige and fear. Enter Melissa Davis, the enigmatic caretaker of Eternal Bloom Botanical Garden, whose uncanny ability to heal and nurture plants defies explanation. Beneath the garden's pristine surface, Melissa guards her own secrets-exotic growths grown for illicit reasons, shadowy funding, and a connection to corporate interests desperate to harness her gifts. As Devin and Melissa form an unlikely alliance, they face threats from hardline commercial nurseries, vengeful academic rivals, and their own tangled pasts.
