The brutally tortured body of a young man was found in the old Jasper Quarry which had been closed for two decades. Deputy Bill Sparks of the Pennington County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate. Bill's investigation leads to several suspects. In his search for the killer, he discovers a military explosives container hidden in the quarry. He also finds a controversial lapel pin near the container. The numbers on the container lead him to the Rapid City Air Force Base for help in discovering where the container came from, and what it contained. Before Deputy Sparks can determine what is going on, and who is involved, a local campground owner is murdered. A search of the victim's home and the buildings in the campground revealed some disturbing items that helped Bill discover the murderer of both men, and what was really happening in the backcountry of the Black Hills.Murder in the Backcountry is a mystery that takes place in 1948. Historical note: the air base outside of Rapid City was Rapid City Air Force Base at the time of this story. In 1953, it was renamed Ellsworth Air Force Base.

The late eighteen hundreds was a time of growth and expansion in the this great country. The land was open and wild. Often the land was waiting for the strong to take it and make something of it. It took courage to keep it once it was settled. Laws were often few and far between. the law was often what man made of it. It was also a time when the land grew. Towns sprouted up all over the country and stagecoaches tied them together with ribbons of narrow, often dangerous, roads. Often men hunted men for the bounty o their heads, while some hunted others so justice could be be met. THE OLD WEST is a collection of short stories that show what it took to build in the west. The stories show how men fought to survive, fought to bring law and order to a lawless land, and the perils that faced those who simply traveled across the land. The stories are fictional, yet they could have happen to any of the many souls that will never be known who reached out to the west for a better life. THE OLD WEST is on of five books of short stores by J.E. Terrall

Men became bounty hunters for a number of reasons. For some it the money, some to show the world, at least their part of the world, how tough they were, and still others it was to help bring justice to the Fronter where laws and court were few and far between. Most bounty hunters were good trackers and hunters, and often loners. Bounty hunters often did not live long. If they built a reputation as a gunfrighter, or by being good at their job of bringing the lawless to justice, they often became a target for someone who wanted to make a reputation for himself by killing the bounty hunter, or to prevent the bounty hunter from doing his job. Jake Murdock, Bounty Hunter is the story of a young man who didn't start out to be a bounty hunter, but seeking revenge for the ruthless killing of his parents turned him into someone who would seek those who broke the law in order to bring them to justice.
